On Schedule

Our broadtail hummingbirds migrate to Mexico every year, and return sometime in May. This year they seemed a little late, but now we have about 40 at our house, and 15 at each of the other cabins.

The broadtail male's back is green and he has a bright red throat. They are larger than the ruby throated hummingbirds back east.

Around the Fourth of July we start looking for the feisty little rufous hummingbird. He's all orange, and is like the redheaded bully on the playground. The male has a bright orange throat, and orange back. The females and young males look like the broadtail females and young.

During their month-long stay, the rufous males will guard the feeders, chasing away any birds who venture near. And all will be chaos. Then, at the end of July they will disappear. The females and newly-hatched young will also go away, but we won't know it was them, because they look like the ones who will stay another six weeks.

They are cool little birds! Didn't know that about the males...

We'd get small birds if we put out a water basin for them. But too lazy to do that and keep it tended. It would have to be me doing it and I'm whelmed with the cats. Meanwhile, we see a lot of big birds --- pelicans, heron, egrets, osprey --- that's the nice part about being here.

I love watching the pelicans flying low over the water in formation.

I watch my birds at the feeder and they spend more time fighting over food than enjoying it, sort of like greedy people and money.

There is some jockeying for position during the day, but at dusk when they are loading up for the night, everyone gets along.

That male Rufus one is such a beauty even if he is quarrelsome.

You can hardly believe your eyes when you see one because of all that orange.

I don't know where our blue jays have gone lately. I suspect they are around the bend at the campground.

You have much more colorful hummingbirds than we do.

I'm guessing you might have some black-chinned there, but am surprised you don't have the costas with the purple throats. We had a black-chinned one in Las Vegas that was so friendly and stayed with us in the yard, almost came in the house.

Such a joy it must be to welcome them to you home each season! For sure I enjoy the way you capture their visit -- thank you!

You're welcome. Foxes may come and go, but the hummingbirds are a constant.

Pics and movies are the best, aren't they? I keep meaning to put together some videos.
