This Oughta Be Good

Hushmaster

One of the garbage disposals stopped working so Mr. Troutbend got one of the stored ones from the garage attic. It's a puny little 1/3 horsepower thing, not just small horsepower, the size is small, and it "Hushmaster" stencilled on the side of it.

So he's working along and hits a snag so we started looking for the owner's manual online. Come to find out the Hushmaster brand was sold by Sears and manufactured by Thermador: back when Thermador made garbage disposals. Now the parts are unavailable (good thing we have all we need) and apparently the manual is also unavailable online.

He figured it out eventually, and then it took a long time to reconfigure the under sink plumbing to match the Hushmaster. Now the Brown Palace once again has a working garbage disposal.

Are you wondering if it's quieter? Is it hushed? No. I would say it's on the loud side.

We have a disposal unit, replaced at least twice. Turns out our piping to the main line is so old that it clogs repeatedly. So now I use it to drain the sink and for tiny table scraps (ort). All sizable pieces of wet food go into a counter top wet trash bag. No I don't put food out for the birds. Get enough poop as it is.

It takes two people to do what she said, but I'm sure I'll get a chance to try it some time.

A repair man taught me a little trick. Put your finger on the reset
button and then without turning it on. put a broom handle down it and
see if you can turn the blades manually. It works nine times out of
ten.

Oh, I did all that (even though it's hard to hold down the reset button while at that same time poking around from the top with a stick). The old one would get stiff over the winter and Mr. YouKnow says Sonia and them burnt out the motor trying to get it started before they got me to help.

After mine bit the dust for the third time, I never installed another. Compost bucket from now on. Drawback? Fruit flies!

We put out so much food for the fox I barely use mine, but who knows what the guests get up to next door.

I just got ours to working again today! It just smells a little bit like the motor is burning. I hope it goes away, as I DO NOT want to replace it right now.

Having watched the mister install five or six disposers, I can confirm they are a pain to put in, it has never gone smoothly. Maybe it helps to find the same brand and model as the old one, but that never happens around here.

There's definitely some advantages to renting in the city.
