Guess Who

The fox has not been here in about a week, the longest he's ever been gone. I had given up on him, and was determined to picture happy and healthy in a new home somewhere.

But this morning I was headed out the backdoor, and there he was on the steps. He's not saying where he's been, but he finally lost all of his winter coat, so he looks a lot different, as if someone had brushed him.

I had some cooked chicken and still have a lot of the dog biscuits I made for him.

I'm glad to see him, of course, but also sad because at some point I have to abandon him when I go away for the winter.

Here is a ground squirrel eating one of the dog biscuits, shaped like a little gingerbread man. The fox is supposed to be eating these rodents. We did see him catch and eat something in the yard recently - he practically swallowed it whole.

He is a very handsome looking fox I hope he comes back when you return after the winter

Somehow I will be surprised to see him again next summer. I just have a feeling that he is going to move on.

I wish I could come feed him while you're gone. I like him.

I tell the people who check the house to throw some dog biscuits out for him when they come here, but I'm afraid the ravens get to them first.

Dare I mention raccoons? I'm still healing from the scathing replies I got (for poisoning them). Hope you're doing alright w/o the mister being around. Be careful.

Hate those raccoons. City folk simply do not understand all the problems country folk face at the paws of these critters. I've got some projects coming up that I wish Mr. Tbend was here to help with (more like do entirely) but I will get through them.

Such a cute guy. Could it be cupboard love on his part? Wave your magic
wand and see if he turns to a prince.

He has changed - spending more time away, and when he's here, he still comes around for dog biscuits, but not as many, and he doesn't linger.

They have been jumping up on things on the back patio, knocking fire wood off the stack, pooping everywhere. I'm still fattening them up. The fox almost caught the tree squirrel today, I don't know how the ground squirrels manage to elude him, they don't seem all that smart.

Love that fox. I think he's got a thing for you, an enchanted prince perhaps.
comment by tealstar on Sept 3, 2011 2:03 PM ()
I'll probably never know what it is about him that has made him so tame. The whole situation feels kind of enchanted, something I will look back on as not quite believable.

Nice to see him again.Do we have a name or did I missed it?
comment by fredo on Sept 3, 2011 1:06 PM ()
No, when he disappeared and I thought I'd never see him again, I told myself what a good idea it was not to name him.

I'm so fond of your fox, it's nice to see him again. I like your squirrels, too. I have lots of doggie pals, so I'd love your biscuit recipe.

Kitchentales will post it tomorrow. He likes this recipe a lot, and it's easy to make, calls for normal ingredients.

Cute as they are, chipmunks and squirrels are real pests here. They eat tomatoes, zucchinis, cucumbers and everything else in my garden. I find all the veggies with one bite taken out all over the yard.

Ground squirrels are like mosquitoes and flies - a person shouldn't think twice about killing one.
reply by troutbend on Sept 3, 2011 1:01 PM ()
First you want to shoot the squirrels and now you will be deserting the fox-- you better be careful or ALL the animals will get together and declare war on you, beavers included!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Sept 3, 2011 11:10 AM ()
Absolutely. War has been declared. They are all forest terrorists. The beavers are leading the pack.
