Some rich folks are renting the Brown Palace for the holiday weekend and she called the other day to touch base.

She kept saying things like 'will it be unlocked, when will you we see you?' and I eventually realized that they didn't know I live on the property. Even after I told her I live next door to the house they are renting, she still didn't get it.

A lot of these vacation rental properties around here are managed by realtors or owners who don't live near the rental. The customers show up at a business office with money and pick up the key, and then head out to find the rental out in the woods and never see the owners.

Turns out they have driven past here a lot over the years, and looked down from the highway, but didn't see how many houses there are here along the river. I told her 'well, it's pretty bushy over here, but there's a whole big house that you'll see when you get here.' She didn't sound like she believed me.

It sounds like they are going to have a great time - their kids are coming up one night, and some friends are coming up for dinner another night. They have been going to some cabins not far from here for years, but those people stopped renting out their cabins. It'd be nice if this became their new favorite place.

I did put a new bottle of balsamic vinegar over there, and washed the windows this morning. Tomorrow I'll go offer to help round up some fire wood. Maybe that'll help.

I'm so glad! You really had ridiculously hot temperatures there. I hope next year is better for you.

I'm not sure - on a diet? gluten free? didn't know where they came from? don't like home-made cookies? People are strange, and this is why I don't do Bed and Breakfast.

Do you rent only until the start of fall, or ??

The latest is October sometime. I've kept that cabin open into November, but it's not really worth paying to keep the phone hooked up that long.

Tell her you'll be there to greet her and then you can carefully point to your house and say that's where we live. She's stuck in a pattern apparently. Good luck with these guests becoming regulars -- but from what I've seen, what's not to like?

Since it sounds like she's going to be doing some cooking, I'm going over later to see if there are any special kitchen items she needs.

Here's another vote that they choose your place as their new favorite place in Colorado!

I would like to find more locals like these people (they live 20 miles away) who want to come up on a regular basis, one reason I keep the rates low. Next summer we're going to hang a 'Vacancy' sign up on the highway and that will work as advertising to the locals because they'll keep it in mind, and we'll get walk-in business from impulsive tourists. I'm thinking if we don't like the looks of them, we'll just say 'oh rats, someone just called and reserved it and we were just on the way to take the sign down.'

'It'd be nice if this became their new favorite place.' All it would take for me is to find a good carrot cake when I opened the door!!!

I used to put a container of fresh cookies over there to greet the guests, but they wouldn't eat them, so I stopped.

I wonder if DH would like to drive around the US for a bit. I must get myself a passport.

We'd done a road trip to your island, so I can vouch for the scenic quality of the journey.
