The Fox Comes for a Visit

It never fails: my phone rings, I look outside, and there is a fox beseeching me with his eyes. The whole time I'm talking to the caller - someone from the county, the roofer, and so on, I'm tossing out dinner rolls and dog biscuits.

For the last several weeks he has been coming around once a week, usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday. The other day, when the weather was changing, he was here twice, morning and afternoon.

Today was a marathon session, and just when I thought he was gone for good, I'd look out the window and he was still hanging around. Maybe it was the lovely sunshine.

I think the latter position was so he could watch for squirrels.

Manatees and foxes-we have varied wild animals in our lives, don't we? I don't have anything exotic-squirrels, possums, skunks, rabbits, chipmunks, raccoons and an occasional coyote. In the news this week there was a story of a coyote biting a man who was in his back yard. There was a second coyote watching. Very rare for that to happen. Usually they go after cats and small dogs, not people.

That'd be horrible to be bitten by a coyote - if it wasn't captured for rabies testing, the guy would have to have rabies shots. That watching coyote must have dared the other one to bite the man.

You may be honored as being the first human to domesticate a fox.

He domesticated himself, just showed up friendly. I worry a little bit about it: if he doesn't fear humans he might walk up to someone who will shoot him.

He seems to be getting more and more comfortable. This is the first time I have seen pictures of him lying down as though he is at home.

This is the first time this year he has acted like that, he's been pretty stand-offish.

It is wonderful that the fox feels safe at your house. He can loll in the
sunshine and have a snack and love you from afar.

It was so funny to watch him acting like nothin' better to do than hang around the yard.

I wonder if foxes can be domesticated. He's beautiful.

I think foxes are supposed to have an odor, but I haven't noticed a smell from him. He is spooked by roofs, such as the covered patio, and patio furniture. It's probably because they don't see very well, so the shapes confuse him.

He's just the most precious fella, resting there in the sunshine. So glad he's adopted you.

I feel so honored to have this fox for a friend. My goofy new age friend told me this is some kind of message from the beyond.

I just love him. He's adorable and he's very lucky to have you!

It would be fun to get an animal psychic to see if the fox has anything to tell us.
reply by troutbend on May 9, 2012 5:06 PM ()
well you have a family there for you.He loves you and can see it.
I have a feeling that he will protect you.
comment by fredo on May 8, 2012 2:35 PM ()
He would run the other way unless I was being threatened by a ground squirrel.

The fox appears to have adopted you for good and all. He looks as if he feels "at home".
comment by tealstar on May 8, 2012 2:14 PM ()
He doesn't make himself at home very often. Usually it's a lot of galloping around hiding food, and then he's gone up the mountain with some bread for the babies.

Did you read about the manatee and her 4 pups visiting the Fort Lauderdale Beach yesterday? They very seldom go where people go. We have a spot where they mate and once in awhile you will see them swimming around but once a few people gather they take off!

I'll google that - would love to see the babies.
