New Roof

I just heard a guy on a Cops re-run talking about how some guys were trying to break into his house and he said: "There was three of 'em, and they were dressed like tinja nerdles."

The roof on this house is flat wood shingles, not shakes. It is 30 years old and every time it storms, pieces of it end up in the yard. For several years we have tried to get a bid on a new metal roof to replace them. One advantage of metal in this area is resistance to sparks from forest fires.

I decided to try once again and called yet another company. When the guy showed up, I said "You are the third guy to come give us an estimate. They poke around the roof for an hour, say they'll get back to us with the bid and we never hear from them again. We call and call and they won't even answer their phone.

"If you plan to do this, don't waste your time and my time, just tell me now that you don't want this job. And if you do take the measurements and then decide you don't want the job, please at least have the courage to tell us."

He said the reason probably is that our roof has a lot of angles, it's relatively steep, and the delivery trucks would not be able to make the sharp turn to get across our bridge. The estimators just gather the data, and then the owners decide they don't want to do the job.

I can understand all that, but you see all kinds of buildings in remote areas with new roofs. If they charge enough, they should be able to overcome any obstacle, and we are starting to get desperate.

Hallelujah! They called today and the company will do the job. Not cheap, but cheaper than what I'd feared. It'll be a lot of disruption and I'll probably have to give big discounts to the renters next door to make up for the last of peace and quiet, but we'll worry about that when it comes up.

If we'd been able to get this new roof last year, there would have been a $500 tax break, but can't look back.

Is a metal roof noisy when it rains? I have a high ceiling with no attic in my LR and we can really hear the rain. Green sounds like a good cover. I went with a medium gray for environmental reasons-not too dark, not too light, when I got my last roof 8 years ago.

I don't know how noisy it will be - I wonder. We've got an attic so that might help. I was hoping they could apply the metal over the current wood shingles for an extra layer of insulation, but no such luck. I suppose the shingles could sweat upwards and cause problems.

You'll feel a lot better when you have this done. We got a new roof about 5 years ago. It was leaking and also was a dirty white. We got green-gray tile and it really makes a difference. And a great company (Dr. Goodroof -- ain't that cute?) did it.

At long last somebody will do the job. We started working on it in 2007.

It will give you a lot of peace of mind. It will probably go on pretty
fast. I bet they can do it in a day and a half. What color are you
choosing?

Once they get the old roof stripped off, it might not take too long, but last year the estimator said it'd take a couple of weeks for the whole project, which surprised me.

Dark green is the color. There were three to choose from, and I took the one in the middle. The light one was a little too light.

Will the new roof be green? Looking forward to the pictures.

Yes, it'll be dark green and might fade some, which will be fine.

Are you having an open house when the new roof is finished?????
comment by greatmartin on May 9, 2012 8:02 PM ()
Should do, shouldn't I? Next year the house will be 100 years old. (It was remodeled in the 1980s.)

Metal goes on faster than shingles and the like. If there's only one layer on there now they might leave that, since metal is also lighter than shingles. Shouldn't be too bad.

I was hoping they'd apply the metal over the wood shingles, but not around here, apparently, so they have to strip them off first.
