Fish Dog

See the trout? It's a German Brown Trout hanging out by our bridge.

The other day some fishermen told me this story:

There is a golden retriever who lives at one of the fishing club properties on the Upper Colorado River that everyone calls Fish Dog.

When someone shows up to fish, Fish Dog gets off the porch and greets them. He leads them to a place in the river and sits down, indicating they should fish there. If they catch a fish, he gets up and goes to another part of the river where there are more fish to catch.

As long as they keep catching the fish, he stays with them and shows them the good fishing spots, but if they fumble around and let the fish get away, he just shakes his head in disgust and goes back to the porch.

True story!

The more we study about the intellect and senses of animals, the more impressed we become. Humans are the stupid ones.

We've got guests next door this weekend, and when he booked the stay he mentioned bringing his two dogs. I tried to talk him out of it, but he didn't give up the idea, and then the other night he sends me an email and says there will be three adults and their FOUR 'well-behaved, house-broken' dogs. You should see these dogs - they are the size of small horses. I made up some new rules for Dogs - they can't be left alone in that house for any reason - because even though the owners may think they are angels, a lot of dogs get separation anxiety and start tearing up furniture.

Golden Retrievers can certainly bend you to their will...Rex is a master.

Mr. TBend's family had a golden retriever named Pam for a lot of years, about 40 years ago, and his mother still talks about how wonderful Pam was.

Cats are great, but dogs have their moments.

I can't quite make out the new avatar but it's better than the fish!

You didn't like the fish? That's taken right here on this property. I could name that fish, if I was so inclined. The new one is a knitted hedgehog named Herbert wearing a sweater and hat.

Wish you were here this weekend to cast a professional eye upon this gang of dogs next door. Actually they do seem well-behaved, in a sort of bouncy, galloping, exuberant way.

Great story there.

As I wrote it, I thought about that phrase - 'fish story' - where they talk about the great big one that got away, but this is true, I'm sure.

I hope they reward him with some nice pan fried trout!

I have heard of dogs doing that before.

There have been a couple goldens here fishing with their owners, and one of them sat or stood at his master's feet wherever they decided to fish from. Now I wonder if that could have been Fish Dog. The other one I saw just milled around and scared off the fish.

Almost made me want to go get my own fish dog. I don't think Buddy would make a very good Fish Cat.
