We Finally Saw Some Deer

This has been a strange year for us here in the mountains. Spring started late, and the warm summer weather was late. Mr. Troutbend got here mid-May, earlier than usual, and was miffed that the weather wasn't conducive to getting on with his maintenance chores.

Even his Las Vegas bowling car got snowed on for the first time in its life.

Our hummingbirds showed up late, and around Father's Day we had maybe 30 of them, but then a lot of them disappeared overnight when the weather got hot, so we were down to 20 instead of building up to the usual 80.

This is last year, two of our 8 feeders:

We've seen a couple of bears, one at a time, which is a little unusual because we don't see them every year, although we know they could be in the area.

Usually we see some deer, maybe as often as once a week, but this year we didn't see them at all, and kept getting reports of carcasses in the area that looked like the mountain lion had been killing our deer.

However, I am pleased to report that a doe and twin spotted fawns came through the side yard yesterday. This is her with one fawn behind her:

If you look hard, you can see her and the two little heads, heading up the mountain.

Even our fox is acting differently this summer. Last year he spent his time up the side stream and toward the front of our house, but this year he always heads up the back mountain with some food so his family must be up there.

I am very fond of that fox. Maybe he'll get friendlier and you can pet him. I'm waiting for that photo.

I would love to feel his fur, but I have mixed feelings about touching him because he might be carrying rabies and if he bit me I'd have to have those painful shots.

Wow, you actually got the fox's expression. And I like that he has a huge dog biscuit.

He gets a lot of expression in his eyes. I didn't know if he'd like those great big dog biscuits, but he seems to think they are perfect for taking to the family, more bang for the buck. What he really likes and seems to wait for are dinner rolls.

Beautiful photography as always. You could have a second career as a
photographer.

They are so sensitive to movement inside the house, it's hard to get a good photo.

OMG! Just look at that fur. Do you think you could tranquilize and brush him for me?
comment by nittineedles on July 8, 2011 1:58 PM ()
Once in awhile we find little clumps of his undercoat in the yard, they are the texture of fine wool. I'll save them, but they are few and far between. I promise you, if I ever get my hands on him for whatever reason, I'll remember you want some of that fur.

Gorgeous pictures! The fox is adorable.

I like the look on his face there. We can see him thinking about what food should he take to the family, and as they have no doubt grown bigger, he has to have two of those big bones before he sets off up the hill.
