Are You Crunchy?

There is a neat old building in the nearby town that was going to be torn down a couple of years ago, but now it is going to have new life as The Crunchy Grocer, a health-food store. It will be the first health food store in this small city, but there is a branch of Whole Foods Market in nearby Fort Collins, a college town.

When I first saw the announcement of the new store name, I thought it was a cute name because it evokes images of healthy salads and whole grains including granola.

Here is a definition of 'crunchy' from the Urban Dictionary:

"crunchy
Adjective. Used to describe persons who have adjusted or altered their lifestyle for environmental reasons. Crunchy persons tend to be politically strongly left-leaning and may be additionally but not exclusively categorized as vegetarians, vegans, eco-tarians, conservationists, environmentalists, neo-hippies, tree huggers, nature enthusiasts, etc.

Also used to describe establishments where alternative foods and products are sold, i.e. natural food stores.

Modified derivative of 'granola.'
"I need more crunchy guys in my life. I'm so tired of dating preppy metrosexual assholes."

"I'm heading out to the crunchy store to pick up some fair trade chocolate and tea tree oil, do you need anything?"

Several years ago I heard someone describing Coloradoans (I'm a fourth-generation native of this wonderful state) as 'granolas,' meaning the same thing as 'crunchy.' I'm not happy about this, because to me it's on step down the slippery slope to being lumped together with Californians.

Name some goofy, expensive law, and it started in California. For example, back when I worked for a building materials manufacturer we had to label some products: "This product is known to the state of California to cause cancer." Well, of course overexposure to components of the product were considered to cause cancer in every state, but California was the first to require that warning on packaging. I thought it was silly - why not just teach everyone in every state that formaldehyde off-gassing is bad for your health and not force manufacturers to get involved.

Anyhow, this isn't about politics, it's about a new shopping option coming to a town near me. Our non-college town is populated by a lot of old folks and red necks, so I hope enough of them are crunchy enough to support this store.

Oh That. Yes, some cities in Colorado prohibit pitbulls.

I started looking at domain names, like crunchy.com, etc. and found they have a website at crunchygrocer.com. I was thinking of signing up for one of their stickers for the hell of it.

Wait for the grand opening (if it ever comes) and maybe they'll be giving them away. I'll send you something.

That's it--The DAM STORE--I LOVE that name!!!

Ah, yuppy comes to your neck of the woods. I am a now-and-then crunchy consumer. I like whipped peanut butter without impediments because it doesn't get unspreadable over time. I moved out of New York just when Whole Foods moved in. This area doesn't know what pate means. This area has a lot of omissions. State Motto: First in Omissions. I think.

The relentless wave was somewhat set back by the housing recession, but given the slightest encouragement, the yuppies will surge to the forefront. And there, to welcome them to town will be the Crunchy Grocer.

We backward folks in Oklahoma have just barely heard of green...much less
crunchy.
comment by elderjane on Sept 10, 2011 4:55 AM ()
I decided that most of the people in our town are going to think the crunchy refers to fresh produce - they'll never know it means 'tree hugger' which is probably just as well.

I have to admit that, when I read your title, I thought about peanut butter. And I am more smoooth...

In that respect, I'm crunchy.

Nope that's not it--it had the name of the place on the roof--I'll remember sooner or later or I will just go through all your posts the last 5-6 weeks!!

Colorado is on my bad list because of the BSL going on in Denver. Other than that, I am crunchy granola and I love it!
comment by kristilyn3 on Sept 9, 2011 8:38 AM ()
I don't know what BSL is, so have no idea what objectionable thing (to you) is going on in Denver.

We have Whole Foods here--no I am talking about the store you showed in a picture--it was something as basic as "The Store"
comment by greatmartin on Sept 9, 2011 7:29 AM ()
Oh. Maybe you're thinking of Ismay Trading Post where my mother grew up (as shown in my avatar right now). The family always called it 'The Store' when they weren't referring to it as 'home' even though they'd moved away from it 40 years ago.

As a "crunchy" myself, I have learned a new term. Thanks for giving me a name other than "green". We have "Nature's Pharm" locally.

You came to mind when I read that definition. If you start using crunchy and find yourself having to explain what you mean by it, you can always go back to 'green.'

It all sounds yummy or maybe I'm just hungry.

I'm crunchy.
I see those California labels in Canada?!
comment by crazylife on Sept 8, 2011 8:52 PM ()
At first, the manufacturers worried that the warnings would scare people from using the products, so considered special packaging for sale in California only, but it was too hard to keep track of that, so they just put them on all products sold wherever, and I think the public has gotten used to them.

In honor of your new store, and wishing it success, I'm eyeing my supply of old fashioned oatmeal and nuts and dried fruits and hatching a granola recipe. I'll think of you with each crunch.

It'd be nice if they partner with the Farmers' Market and bring us some good seasonal produce in addition to good flour and grain products. They might give Granny's Gluten Free Zone a run for the money, too. Not to say our chain supermarkets aren't making a valiant effort to sell organic foods and provide a full line of gluten-free products.
reply by troutbend on Sept 8, 2011 10:01 PM ()
I like the name of the other store better!
For the record--I am crunchy & sweet but definitely NOT a vegetarian!!!
comment by greatmartin on Sept 8, 2011 8:01 PM ()
Whole Foods is a big chain with stores throughout North America and the UK, and I think their name is definitely better than Crunchy Grocer, which is just a one-location deal.
