In Between

Not too hot, not too cold, we're in between summer and fall. The leaves are fading, but haven't started to turn to fall colors. The flowers are gone except for some of those specific to fall. The vegetables in the garden are giving up the ghost.

This morning the fox was almost shivering in his summer coat. He is running behind on growing back his winter coat.

Here he is last September when his coat was further along:

It was 33C/91F today but next week the highs will be 19C/66F. Such a big difference.

Okay. That's a heads-up for me to keep an eye on the overnight lows. Thanks!

Sure love that fox. I wonder how he gets through the winter. Ed and I had renters in our first house (next door) and they were picky beyond belief, she spilled nail polish on the bathroom tile, covered it over with an area rug, they took the glass doors off the dvd player on the bottom of the TV stand; they complained because we didn't have double locks and they were on their honeymoon!

I don't think I would ever commit to feeding the renters, that sounds like it would open up a lot of issues that I don't even like to think about.

I really love the fox picture.... thank you for always posting them and keeping us updated on him.

I wish he could talk. If I was an animal psychic I could 'see' what he is thinking as movies in my mind, but I'm not so I have to guess.

This is my favourite time of year. Perfect for sleeping at night but warm afternoons spent in the back yard.

For sure! This time of year always makes me think of apple cider and applesauce doughnuts with cinnamon sugar on the outside.

The fox must have been very busy with his kits. He looks thin and has
probably had a bigger litter to provide for this year.

I sure would like to meet the rest of his family, but I don't think we ever will.

The weather here is perfect! Cool at night, hot late afternoon & evening. Peas & green beans have given up, swiss chard, carrots, beets & squash are doing amazing! Not sure yet if I'll get many tomatoes.
comment by crazylife on Sept 10, 2011 9:52 PM ()
My mail-ordered tomato starts that were developed in Russia for short growing seasons have done okay, and I've gotten several ripe tomatoes from them, although not very large. I think I will order them again next year, but they are very small when they come, so I'm thinking of ordering them to be delivered in April instead of May so I can grow them bigger inside the house before setting them out.

Very similar here... some leaves are down and the tomatoes turn pinkish and the squash are seedy... it's almost over... The long winter.... hopefully spring will come early next year like it did two years ago. This was a very short summer, although work on the roof still needs to be completed before the snow flies... which could happen in small amounts within a month. Geez, I'm depressing myself.

You are always my gardening inspiration, more so than Randy, because you've got a shorter growing season like I have hear.

Look like he needs to put on some weight there.Yes,the fall look is here in New England. The sounds and smell.Leaves are fading.
But still very nice and dry. This is the way that I liked it.

The fall leaves in your area are the best in the world.

We have seen a fox in our neighborhood but only once. We have coyotes that keep the fox away. Did the people come to the Brown Palace last week? Will they be back? It is a beautiful sunny day in the 70s here today. Perfect. Cold front coming next week.

Those people came and made themselves at home. Very messy people, and they rearranged the kitchen cupboard contents to suit themselves. Also, it took me several days to clean the grill rack from the Weber grill; whatever it was they used for barbecue sauce really cooked on there. I've got mixed feelings about them ever coming back, but money is money, I suppose.

We are having a beautiful day today-0-so far not even rain clouds!!!

What is that in the first picture on the lower left next to the black figamigjig---a rock? An animal?
comment by greatmartin on Sept 10, 2011 1:02 PM ()
It's a rock. Looks very regular and man-made, doesn't it?
reply by troutbend on Sept 11, 2011 12:10 PM ()
The tip tops of my neighbor's maple tree are turning red.

Every year we wonder if it will be a good year for the leaf color, and early signs are tantalizing.
