Columbine Flashback

Isn't it odd that they have to point out the shooter was a white man? Aurora is a fairly diverse suburb of Denver, so the theatergoers were probably of various colors. There must have been some reason for the media to decide there was significance to the shooter's race.

This was a midnight showing of the movie, and I am puzzled at why parents took their small children to it; not that 3 month old so much (I hope it wasn't crying during the movie), but the 6 and 7 year olds and so forth, since the movie is rated PG-13.

"AURORA, Colo. -- Six hospitals across the metro area are treating patients from the deadly shooting at a movie theater near the Aurora Mall.

Witnesses said a gunman set off a smoke bomb of some sort in the theater, then opened fire, during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."
Police said 10 people died in the theater, two died at nearby hospitals. The Police Department inititally reported that 14 people had died. Approximately 50 people were shot, including the deceased, police said.

The injured range in age from 3 months old to 45 years old. Many were rushed immediately to hospitals in police cars by responding officers.
Police arrested one man in the parking lot of the theater. 7NEWS has confirmed the suspect is a 24-year-old white man, James Holmes."

People in theater say at first they thought the shooting was a part of the movie's special effects.

The movie will be associated with this violence, and deranged fools who want the notoriety will decide this is a good way to get it by staging similar incidents at future showings, or choose other movies. I hate to say it, but maybe this movie should not be shown any more.

Now movie theaters will become yet another place with metal detectors and airport-type security. Next, it will be grocery stores.

I'm thinking the people who took their kids to a midnight showing were just too cheap to get a sitter. It's a tragedy and should galvanize a new fight to control guns. Meanwhile, the news can't cover anything else and I do think saturation coverage is over the top.

And since the theater shooting there have been so many others all over the country. I don't know if all the news coverage of these events encourages copy-cats.

The shooter was a phd candidate and didn't have a lick of sense. This
amazed me. No matter how smart you are, you can be a crazy fool. I saw
this at Bobby's house and it has puzzled me ever time I think about it.

It's a miserable thing, and I'm just about to switch off the TV and put it out of my mind. What boggles my mind is who takes toddlers and babies to a midnight movie that is rated PG-13.

There are families still trying to locate their loved ones. Four different theaters in that complex were showing the same film since it was the premiere night, so there were people who went to see it, but weren't in that particular theater. The shooter had an assault rifle, a handgun, and a shotgun. He bought a ticket, watched the movie for 30 minutes, then went out the exit door to his car where he had the guns and started firing from the front of the theater. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest and a gas mask, and other body protection. Because many people wore costumes, this went unnoticed. And he didn't have a concealed carry permit for the guns.

I thought this part was odd: "Approximately 50 people were shot, including the deceased" It's not like we might think they died from brain aneurysms or suicide or got knifed.

These things always bring out the worst inanity our news people are capable of.

'Isn't it odd that they have to point out the shooter was a white man?' They definitely would have pointed out it was a Black man if that was the case--it is the way our society works today.
That people would think it is part of the movie is just weird to me.

Because it was opening night for that movie, people showed up in costumes and when the guy started shooting they first thought it was something special the theater did to add to the excitement. He fired a couple shots into the ceiling, and when people started running, he picked them off. He is from California, a neuroscience graduate student, came to Colorado to go to medical school, but was in the process of dropping out.

It is so scary. I thought the same thing, one more place where there has to be increased security because of the deranged people we share space with. sigh. I feel for all the victims and their families. Scary scary world.

Selfish as this sounds, I hate that it happened in my state because we'll never hear the end of it, and confirms the world's impression that Colorado is the nut state (replacing California).

Same here, John.

It says something about the content of that movie that the people in the theater thought someone throwing bombs and shooting at them was part of it.

That isn't why I don't go to movies, but it's a good reason.

This is going to be good for the home theater industry.
