Our New Cat

Our overnight temperatures have been going down lately, last night it was 48 degrees. We keep the doors and windows open at night and shut them in the morning, so the house stays cold all day, as if we had air conditioning. The days are generally warm, but when a breeze comes up, there is a crispness that whispers the coming of fall. Not soon, but it's a promise that will be kept.

The new cat is here and after spending all day under the bed is on mouse alert in the dining room. She already caught one mouse tonight, but it got away while she was playing with it. They are probably getting into the trap to escape her.

I think she will be a good cat for us. We have no idea what to call her, she needs to be here awhile before it comes to us. Paul Gallico said cats have secret names that they come with.

Her front legs are covered with short hair, and then it becomes long, as if she is wearing a winter coat, and she has the sweetest face.

Here is the back story: she showed up as a stray when she was about 2 months old, and the people kept her for a year, but now they are moving in with their mother and can't take the cat. I'm not sure why they took it to a veterinarian that isn't an official cat shelter, but they did. This particular vet is sort of an animal hoarder, so agreed to keep the cat and try to find a home for it. So she came to us at no charge, spayed, with all shots and microchipped, and a carrier, and a kennel, and food.

We haven't been neglecting the goose. Today we were out front with him and he got into his water tub on his own.

The water drops on his back are reflecting the light and look like pearls.

And the fox also showed up today. He continues to lose his winter coat, and looks smaller every time I see him. Keep in mind he is always this small, it's just that his fur coat gets fluffier.

He caught and ate a squirrel at the house next door, and we found the tail in the yard.

Your new girl is gorgeous! My rescuer came with a name, "Macey". Probably because her birthday is in May. Had they paid attention, her name would be "Chatty Cathy"! Your girl will let you know her name in no time. You are lucky to have found each other.

We decided if we'd waited to name our previous cat, his name would have been Crackers instead of Buddy, because he loved crackers so much.

Mr. fox looks really ragged right now. Quakers looks really great with the water drops on him.

The fox really did look rough there, and now (end of August) all that winter fur is gone and he's all sleek. I never got tired of watching Quackers while he was here. He talked to us, and talked to the cat.

She is lovely.

Her fur is silky soft, and she has such a nice personality. We are fortunate to have her for our friend.

She will have lots of playmates with all the mice you seem to have.

I think she gets a little bored when there are no mice, and wonder how she'll do this winter in Las Vegas. Maybe she'll play with her toys more.

I'm sure her antsy antics will even out. New situations are difficult and losing her people must have bothered her too. She'll calm down as ours did. What was her name when you got her? She is beautiful. More important than how she treats visitors is that she travels well. Both Sniff (my late tuxedo cat) and Chewy, get sick in the car.

Her name was Shelby. I can't identify with it at all. She had to ride 90 minutes in the car coming here (in a carrier) and handled it really well. I'm sure it will disorient her to have to move to Las Vegas in a few months, but I'm sure she will get used to it. I am thinking of having her come next door to the rental house with me for a night or two so she can get used to being in a new place with me still there.

Maybe you should get a mink coat for the fox?!?!?!? (Why am I coming up with these really corny jokes?!?!?!?)

Mr. Troutbend's cousin Karen is called the cat foister by all the family because she's always got some cat looking for a home.

She is such a pretty cat and nice and young too. I think the fox will be
getting his winter coat back now that it is cool at night. I know it will
come but whenever it does, I will welcome autumn, my favorite season.

She was friendly (too friendly) all night, jumping on and off the bed, wanting to be petted, getting in windows, and now that it's daylight she's hiding under the bed again. It'll be nice when this all gets mellowed out, and I hope she isn't one of those cats that just freaks out when company comes.

Your new kitty is a sweetie pie. Angel's secret name is Devil. I named her too soon. Has she met Quackers yet? You'd think that fox would put some meat on his bones after all the squirrels and dinner rolls he eats.

I think she has heard Quackers, but we haven't made a point of introducing them.
