Bighorn Sheep

There is a herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in this area. Usually they can be seen along the highway about 3 miles east of here, and rarely do they come to this part of the canyon.

I should have known this morning when I heard car horns honking up on the highway that the sheep were on the way. They are very good at avoiding cars, but people always stop, sometimes in the travel lane, to snap pictures of them, so people trying to get somewhere will honk at them.

It was a small herd: a large mature ram, some females, and some youngsters, seen here on the cliff across the river from my house.

I remember being one of the tourists gawking at the red rock sheep near Vegas many years ago. We have a lot of deer here.

The DOW put up some interpretive signs at some of the pullouts, and the sheep actually show up there 2% of the time, and the rest of the time they are visible, they create a driving hazard. I think they enjoy doing that.

Having been born under the sign of the ram, I really enjoyed seeing them.
One of my favorite presents was a large plaster of paris ram.

My mother was born a couple of days after your birthday, and I never thought about her zodiac sign. I'll bet Crazy YouKnow Who knows all about it, that's her sort of thing.

don't see things like that close here ---a mob of roos occasionally out bush but they take off when you get near

These sheep are so used to being watched, they seem to enjoy an audience.

We could learn a lot from them.

I was standing in my yard, not driving.

WE see them in Zion Nat'l Park on occasion. As you say, people stop their autos in the travel lane to take photos, oblivious to the pile up behind them.

A lot of the locals get irritated with the lookers, but then they'll spot little babies and slam on the brakes. Not me, of course.

I don't suppose they ever let you get close? Are they safe from hunters, predators? You have wonderful animals around you. Love the photos.

People can get fairly close to them along the highway. I wasn't very far when I was taking the pictures, and they just kept munching on the grass. I don't think there is a hunting season on them here because the Department of Wildlife is trying to establish the herd, not thin it out.

Unbelievable the wildlife around you.

I'd like to see the bear or the mountain lion again some time - from the safety of the house.

I really like that largest group shot where one of them on the right has her head tilted to get into the picture.
