The Seasons of the Fox

Early yesterday morning the ravens were carrying on, so I got up to check the yard, and sure enough, there was the fox after a 10-day absence.

His winter coat is filling in, and his face has that Akita look to it.
October 13, 2012:

Here are picture of him taken in other parts of the year:

Full winter coat: April 2012

Early May: still a full coat.

image

End of May, his under coat is thinning, leaving the outer coat of guard hairs.

August. His tail is really diminished, and you can see the fur close to his skin.

image

September. Winter coat completely gone, but his tail is starting to fill in again. He looks like a very young fox

This is the fox early in October last year.

And this was yesterday.

We are still seeing the seasons coming early, and I think his coat is filling in earlier this year.

That is a beautiful fox and I hope he thrives for many years and that you can get closer to him.

His legs and chest are so dark.

But maybe if we gave him a bath his chest hair would be white.

I've noticed that this year, too. It seems like his underside should be snowy white, but it's really a light gray. I am going to look back at previous years and see if his chest used to be white. Regarding their dark legs, I've noticed that both my foxes have white areas on the tops of their feet.

Such a beautiful animal!

I have hundreds of pictures of him, and will continue to take more every time I see him. One of these days it will be the last visit and I'll miss him so much.

I bet he curls his tail around himself for warmth in the winter. He is
most handsome with his winter coat.

His tail wraps right around, covers his nose and his legs. According to what I've read, they sleep out in the open, don't seek out a burrow or a cave.

In September he looks like a hyena.

Usually when I post those pictures where we can see the true shape of his body, everyone says I need to feed him more, and I always tell them that under the fur he always looks like this, a real lightweight.

He's so beautiful!

You just want to reach out and touch that beautiful fur, don't you? Foxes are supposed to have an odor, but I've never smelled anything at all when he's around.

lovely photos ---you must be able to get close---red foxes here are in the parks of the city.

He will stand still to have his picture taken, and I use the zoom lens a lot, but I do get within 5 or 6 feet of him. We have another fox that showed up this year who won't stand still for an instant if she sees us.

Does he think you're his mommy now?
comment by steve on Oct 14, 2012 2:46 PM ()
Not as much as the last couple of years. He used to be here almost every day, then not appear for two or three days. Now, it's the opposite, and I wonder if he has another human family he visits. I wonder who serves up the best dinner.

I tried to find out why foxes have such large tails and the best answer I could find is "the big tail functions to help balance and maneuverability."
Well, doesn't explain anything. But google isn't perfect.

That explanation does leave something to be desired. Imagine all the warmth from that great amount of hair. It reminds me of last spring when the fox heard something that startled him, and his tail immediately jerked upright. I suppose when he's fleeing he gets it way up and out of the way.

What a cutie!!! I think you are lucky that he is sharing some of his time with you!

Lucky, indeed. His coat is the prettiest this time of year.
