Bears Part Two

Not only did that bear break into a neighbor's cabin, it completely destroyed the window over the sink at my guest cabin and went through the kitchen cabinets looking for food. All it found was dry coffee creamer and sugar, but dishes got broken in the process. I feel fortunate that it went out the way it came in rather than tearing up the house looking for an exit. But we'll have to replace that window.

The wood in the window frame split horizontally.

The sink is full of glass with black bear hairs.

It's a worry to think that bears have taken to home invasions. I had no idea that a secured building was so insecure and worry some about what if it decides to break into my house some night.

Re your reply to drmaus: That would put me right off honey.

Yesterday I decided the bear isn't coming back to break in again, so cleaned up the mess as best I could. I should be doing all the prevention things, but am in denial that I need to this late in the year.

That must be it - in our case around here, he's looking from one cabin to the next until he finds one that's just right.

I'm god I haven't seen any Bears around

It's nice to know they are around because that's nature, but nerve wracking when they start interacting with us.

It really gives you a sense of unease about being gone for the holidays.

At some point the bears will go into hibernation, so usually by November we don't have to worry about home invasions by bears, but if it stays warm like it has, they might not realize it's time to go to bed.

Well at least you have his DNA just in case!! Take care--bears are no fun to tangle with!

Here I was thinking how fun it was to get a good look at that bear when it was lying on my driveway, and then things went bad on us. Live and learn, for sure.

Oh! I was about to email you to ask what you meant by the bears came back and it got bad. This is disturbing. Are bears deterred by chemical smells like ammonia or mothballs? Please get lots of stuff like Bears Plus Barking Dog Alarm and Bear B Gone so they are terrified to return.

This is what I have to do: make 'water' balloons with ammonia in them and put honey on the outside and put around the cabins. I'll make a couple now in case he's still around (neighbors are reporting a bear about 6 miles down canyon, might be the same bear), and then for sure we'll have them out next spring. The Parks and Wildlife guy says this should discourage the bear from coming back - better than noise or rubber bullets.
