Back Home

I'm back home from a quick trip to Oklahoma to visit with Jeri, and have lots to tell you. Here's a start:

We had another big snow storm while I was gone and it looks like there was a power outage that caused the standby generator to take over. Looking at the history readout on the generator, it ran from 12 p.m. until 1 a.m. the next day.

Whenever the generator is running, you can hear it in the house, and Eloise the cat goes around with her ears at a funny angle the whole 12 minutes when it does the weekly test run, so I can imagine 13 hours of it. And meanwhile, inside the house, the timer lamps all did their thing - on /off - the only lights in the canyon. I could have watched TV, opened and closed the garage door, had water and septic working - all the comforts of home.

Wonder how much propane it used. Mr. Troutbend knows how much it's supposed to use.

I am sorry I missed it, because we seldom have outages, and this would be the first real one since I got the generator running - would have been nice to see it in action.

Eloise was probably under the bed with her paws over her ears!!!

I'm going to watch her next time it starts up for testing: maybe she'll give me a clue that she's used to it now, or traumatized.

We still have not used ours yet.It has been a couple of years now.
Nice to talk to you briefly .I am sure Jeri was happy that you came and spend some time with the family there. We will be seeing them soon.Hope that the weather will be changing by then.
Glad that you got home safely.Talk to you later and again thanks for the book.

Good talking to you, too, Fredo. Happy birthday all the month of May.

Glad you're home safe & sorry you missed the snow storm. That generator is some impressive gizmo!

There were tire tracks in the snow that I am trying to figure out. It's possible the power company people came down here to see why we had lights when nobody else did. Of course, if I'd been here, nothing would have happened - no power outage, probably no snow.

One time long ago camping at Maroon Lake near Aspen, I opened the tent flap to three inches of wet snow! It was June 22nd.

High country camping is really something else. I have thought about taking a tent up to where we take our cell phone and stay the night, just for the experience. It's about 10 minutes from the house, and I think after about 20 minutes I'd be tempted to abandon the idea in favor of a warm bed and running water.

We have a generator but it is not connected. Ed would have to take it out of the garage and connect it if we had a major outage. We ignore it for general outages that usually don't last more than a few hours if that. Ed is convinced we haven't had a major storm/hurricane precisely because he is now prepared. Was Eloise alone while you were away? Was she glad to see you?

Eloise was home alone, and she didn't come greet me right away when I got back, but then she was really glad to see me, and very friendly. I was afraid I'd find dead mice arrayed here and there, but there weren't any. I think they put out the word that there is a cat here who means business and they avoid the place all together. Yesterday she got shut in the garage for awhile, and she really carried on about that once she got back in the house.

So happy you and Jeri could enjoy a visit together. What a treat. Welcome back home. Great that you have a generator. Kudos for preparedness! Wish I had had one last summer, but no chance this apartment complex would ever do such a thing. Two storms knocked out my power, the first for three days and the second worse one for six days. It was miserable, in 100-plus degree heat. Now I am hunting for good solar chargers....

Jeri is such a good friend - you can say 'I'm on my way' and she just answers back 'good - I've got lemon dessert all made up ready.'

Having a generator seems to prevent power outages! It is a shame you missed
this one and too bad that Eloise had to hear it for such a long time.

It's Murphy's Law. If you get a storm shelter, Oklahoma City will never have another tornado.

Snow in May. I remember when that used to happen here.

Remember how last year everyone talked about the warm weather being about two weeks early? It seems like this year we are back to a more normal pattern. The hot and dry is sitting to the west of us - California and Nevada are 20 degrees hotter than they should be for this time of year. But remember all those years that California was famous for wildfires and mudslides? Life is back to normal in that regard.
