First Hummingbird of 2013

When I lived in Vermont many decades ago, people said the crows were the first sign of spring. Some folks look for the first robin. I look for the hummingbirds.

Last year the first hummingbirds showed up on April 24. This year, it was at 5:30 pm today: April 29.

There was one, and now there are two, both males. I have feeders out, and they are happy.

We have a snow storm coming tomorrow, but they'll get through it no problem.

Local birds are getting really loud about 4 in the morning now when it is still dark. It is waking up Dudley the cat, who tries to get everyone up.

I heard a mockingbird the other night when I was at Jeri's in Oklahoma, and didn't get around to going outside to hear it better. We don't have them here.

Summer is going to sneak up on us, and I'm not ready for it.

They were probably on their way somewhere north.

Our ground squirrels are around. If I put out some grass seed, they will eat it.

My first sign of spring... the flies!

I've seen one or two flies, but now that you mention it, they have been notable by their absence here.

We have every kind of bird but I don't know when they're due. I do enjoy them though, specially the pelicans.

Pelicans are so much fun to watch when they fly in formation. We get sea gulls here - they come to eat the worms that are turned up when the farm fields are plowed.

What a joy to see!

They showed up the day before I left for Oklahoma. I put out feeders and left, and the next day there was 17 inches of snow. I worried about the frozen feeders the whole time I was gone (not very long), but all was well when I got back.

Since the fox has gone AWOL, the hummingbirds are all I've got to keep me company.
