Colorado Runoff Has Peaked

Runoff has peaked!

What is known as "the lobster" is a snow formation made by the melting of the front ski bowls on Peak 8, part of the Breckenridge, Colorado ski resort. It always forms the same shape, year after year.

When it has formed a perfect "lobster" the runoff has peaked in most areas. Usually the lobster forms around the 15 of June.

The Lobster has appeared on Peak 8 just a couple of days ago, around July 15, because this past winter set records for heavy snowfall in the high mountains.

Here is my river, still in high runoff, but slowly decreasing.

I've been to Breckinridge twice--once with my kids on vacation (1990), another with my newlywed (#2) on our honeymoon (1993). My sister and then husband owned a condo there.

I haven't been up there in 35 years. At one time I was running the school lunch program for Summit County, and Breckenridge was part of my area.

Yes, yes, yes!

It's been a spectacular year for the runoff, but several people have died in rafting and kayaking accidents on the swollen rivers, so maybe it's time for less water.

I'll bet it is nice and cold!

I think the fish must be so happy to have this colder more abundant water. When it goes back to the normal foot or so and the daily high is in the low 90s they can get heat stressed and run out of oxygen.
