I Made Him Cry

I told you I fired one of the guys I work for last week. I had replaced him with a guy I know named Anthony. I wanted to give him the opportunity to learn a trade and maybe make something of himself.

This morning, he called at 8:15 and told me he wasn't coming in that he was sick and needed to go see the doctor. I wasn't very understanding and jumped on him very hard. I knew his past and had seen him call in before. So, I was a little justified to question his truthfulness.

However, the part of my father that is in me came out and I hit hard and fast on the weakest points and I made him cry. I hate that part in me.

Anyway, he calls me late this afternoon almost hysterical. He had gone to the emergency room because of chest pains. They told him he has bronchitis. Not too bad. But when they did the chest x-ray or whatever they did, they found spots on his lymph nodes around his stomach and liver.

He has a family history of cancer. His mother and one of her sisters died from it. His aunt is going through treatment for it now. His grandmother survived it.

He was told to see an oncologist in the next 2 - 3 days. He has barely stopped crying since I picked him up. He is upstairs soaking in a hot bath.

I made him cry.

I am such a prick sometimes.

HUGS> We all lose our temper at some time. Unfortunatley your timing was not good. HUGS & hope all works out okay. Your friend can find tons of information on cancer at cancer.org. When David had cancer I went there and was able to get all kinds of good & helpful information.

You're there for him now, right? That's what matters.

You reacted based on previous experience... that doesn't make you a prick. You picked him up and let him take a bath... I'm sure he forgives you for making him cry - hopefully you have forgiven yourself.

You reacted like a lot of bosses in your position would have based on the background so I would not worry too much about it. It seems particularly rough because of the results of his test. You would have done it differently if you had known.
I am so sorry to hear about your friend.

Hey Chris, I know how you feel. When someone crys wolf enough, you have a hard time believing them when one really appears. Don't beat yourself up too bad.

But you're supporting him and being there for him and that's what matters today.

Hey Pirate man, you deal with a lot of people with some iffy backgrounds, you said so yourself. You didn't know. He could have been jerking you around. It's a easy assumption to make. Give yourself a break, as you are giving him one. Maybe the lesson will soften that part of you that you hate. You aren't that part of you. It's a flawed part of a real decent human being. You're getting it right now, I'm sure.
