Stuff to Be Done

Our bedroom TV has no power and getting to it means moving the chest away from the wall. So I took all the clothes out of the three drawers and stored them in a large cardboard box, and Ed couldn’t move the piece which is nested between two other chests because it is too heavy, so we are waiting on Danny, our super duper friend and electrician genius. He can do anything.

Meanwhile, going through the items removed was a trip in itself. This is stuff I don’t wear because most of it is for a cold climate or for the opening at the Met during high season. No one down here dresses like that. I had forgotten I even owned this stuff and some of it is truly elegant. I mean there is a shawl that if I was wearing it at a fancy affair, Mrs. Bill Gates would come over and ask me where I got it. I’m not getting rid of any of it. Maybe I’ll live in NYC again. Maybe I’ll become an astronaut. But it stays.

Ed and I finally got around to making wills and when we are both gone, he would like everything we own of value to be auctioned off and the proceeds donated to a college fund for a fatherless child. While I was making a list for our lawyer, I realized I had to learn more about our musical instruments. I know our guitar that was made for Jay in the 30s by D’Angelico himself is worth a lot. A D’Angelico is the holy grail of guitars. I didn’t know much about the Epiphone Emperor Banjo. The news is that it is a very rare banjo – only 10 were made and it is a collector’s item. Ed said not to sell them and said he will start guitar lessons again. He’s welcome to do that, but pardon me for being skeptical about his dedication. He went through three guitar teachers in New York. All three died while he was studying with them, and I cautioned him to leave that part out when he was talking to a prospective teacher. He’d love to play classical. It’s a bit late to be starting methinks. I have been studying piano since I was 12. The learning never stops and you never get “there”. The journey is what counts but I don’t think he hears me.

So I am reviewing Bach and Beethoven and giving Chopin a rest.

I love shawls, so I'm wondering what that one looks like. The idea of providing an education for a young person is a wonderful thought.

I agree with keeping the elegant clothing. Some things are important for our sense of well-being.

I think Ed's idea about the scholarship for the fatherless child is great. It is double happiness. Whoever gets the rare items will be happy and so will the fortunate child who gets the help he needs.
