Teal's Modest Adventures

Politics & Legal > Responding to Eddie's Romney Accolade

Responding to Eddie's Romney Accolade

Why Mitt Romney is unlikeable ...

Eddie: 1. Drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with gracious, statesmanlike aura. Looks like every central casting's #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief.

Teal: You’re kidding, right? We should elect him because he could be Barbie’s Ken? Anyway, I think Obama is more handsome because his face and his expressions show more character and internal moral conviction. When I look at the Ken-like face of Romney, what I see is a smug self importance. This is not appealing.

Eddie: 2. Been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her, including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS.

Teal: Obama has also been married to ONE woman his entire life and been faithful to her. Men SHOULD stand by their wives through illness. Are you saying he should get points for this? Meanwhile, Republican candidates McCain and Gingrich both divorced wives who got ill. The first Mrs. McCain was disfigured in an auto accident. Gingrich’s previous wife had cancer. They both latched on to more “viable” wives in short order.

Eddie: 3. No scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How boring is that?)

Teal: I don’t mind boring. I do mind taxable income sheltered in off-shore accounts while secretaries are paying the max. Yes, it was legal. It was also SLEAZY AND UNPATRIOTIC.

Eddie: 4. Can't speak in a fake, southern, "black preacher voice" when necessary.

Teal: Considering the postures Romney has taken, depending on which crowd he is talking to, I think it highly likely he would have developed a black preacher voice if he thought he could carry it off. To his credit, this is the one smarmy thing he did not attempt.

Eddie: 5. Highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School...and by the way, his academic records are NOT sealed.

Teal: Reality check: Yes, Romney’s records ARE sealed. Pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, it would be illegal under federal law for Occidental, Columbia or Harvard to release the records of any student to reporters or member of the general public without specific written permission from said student. Obama has not released those records, but neither has any other presidential candidate in history.

Obama also attended Harvard Law and was editor of the Law Review. By all accounts, he was a brilliant student.
Also his voting record in Illinois is public. Anyone can look it up.

Eddie: 6. Doesn't smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today's America?

Teal: Who cares? He’s entitled to his choices. But it does speak to a lack of imagination and adventure.

Eddie: 7. Represents an America of "yesterday," where people believed in God, went to Church, didn't mess around, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS!

Teal: Please don’t bring God into it. The misuse of religion to advance evil private agendas is at the root of 99 percent of the world’s ills. Anyway, I was born a Christian and if I were still a believer, I would highly doubt that Jesus just decided he would move to America because Joseph Smith told him it was a good idea. I have already commented on what I think of the America of yesterday – the one that denied women and blacks, the one that infantilized women, forced them into substandard positions in business, did not pay them equally (this is still going on) and kept them barefoot and pregnant without recourse to family planning. The one, also, that lynched blacks for daring to look at a white woman, let alone approach her. All it took was for some white woman with a neurosis to say, “Yeah, he looked at me.” Yes, that America deserves to remain in the past, and you should know better than to hold it up as an example of better living. Better living for whom? The likes of you and Romney, no doubt.

Eddie: 8. Has a family of five great sons...and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab. But, of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that "choice" deserves America's scorn.

Teal: A stay at home mom who had nannies up the kazoo and a hairdresser who came to her house and who knows what all-else. Please do not confuse her with hard-working women who need a day-care center that is being closed because Romney and Ryan wouldn’t allocate funds for it.

Eddie: 9. Oh yes.....he's a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest.

Teal: I am an equal opportunity disser of all religions because of above stated reasons. Quite frankly, the people who use their religion for good are in the minority. And, if Right Wing Evangelicals are the wave of the future, WE ARE ALL DOOMED.

Eddie: 10. And one more point...pundits say because of his wealth, he can't relate to ordinary Americans.

I guess that's because he made that money HIMSELF...as opposed to marrying it or inheriting it from Dad.
Apparently, he didn't understand that actually working at a job and earning your own money made you un-relatable to Americans. My goodness, it's a strange world, isn't it?

Teal: Mitt and Anne attended college and were either married or living together at that time (it doesn’t matter to me) and were "working" their way through school by CASHING IN BONDS MITT’S FATHER GAVE HIM AND THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO APPLY FOR ANY STUDENT LOANS. Geez, what hardship.
So, he had one hell of A LEG-UP and don’t for a minute think that didn’t set him on an upward path unavailable to most working Americans.

*****************************************************

Teal: Fact: If you are a volunteer, you are unpaid. “Unpaid volunteer” is an oxymoron.

Working on your dad's campaign efforts without being paid does not qualify as altruistic endeavor. Sheesh, it's not as if he was a Community Orgnizer who actually helped the poor rise above their circumstances.

By the time Romney was governor of Mass., he was rich rich rich. I woudn’t have taken a salary either. Why are you giving him points for the decent things he did, when that is something one expects of an EXCEPTIONAL LEADER?

Eddie: Mitt Romney is one of the wealthiest self-made men in our country but has given more back to its citizens in terms of money, service and time than most men.

Teal: He is NOT SELF-MADE. He made the most of a privileged upbringing, he had a nest-egg from his dad, he did the most he could with it at the expense of the companies he devastated He made his money by cannibalizing companies, firing the workers, and shipping the jobs overseas. Hoorah. If he had made money that was not at the expense of the people who fell under his axe, I would give him more credit.

Furthermore, Massachusetts fell to 49th in job creation while he was governor (look it up).

Edie: And in 2011 Mitt Romney gave over $4 million to charity, almost 19% of his income.

Teal: And he didn’t claim it as a tax credit because that would have lowered his tax rate to 9 percent and he didn’t want to do that while running for president. But, you know, if he does not get into office, he can REFILE and get the tax credit later, and you can bet he will do that.

Eddie: Just for comparison purposes, Obama gave 1% and Joe Biden gave $300 or .0013%.

Teal: You do know, don’t you, that they don’t have Romney’s wealth? Meanwhile, what did you give?

Mitt Romney is Trustworthy:

Teal: This claim is the biggest joke in your entire narrative. He has reversed himself on every position in the campaign. He is against abortion,or he is for it under certain circumstances; he hates Obamacare, but it is patterned on his Massachusetts care and he hated it for two years and now he is claiming it, and on and on...

Eddie; He will show us his high school and college transcripts.
He will show us his social security card.
He will show us his law degree.
He will show us his draft notice.
He will show us his medical records.

Teal: See below where federal law prohibits schools from dispensing this kind of information.

Eddie: Mitt Romney's background, experience and trustworthiness show him to be a great leader and an excellent citizen for President of the United States. You may think that Romney may not be the best representative the Republicans could have selected. At least I know what religion he is, and that he won't desecrate the flag, bow down to foreign powers, or practice fiscal irresponsibility.

Teal: Obama has not desecrated the flag, nor bowed down to foreign powers. He has been exceptional in foreign affairs, compared to Romney who puts his foot in his mouth whenever he is not rehearsed. Remember, Bin Laden is dead and our auto industry is alive. Romney said “Let Detroit go bankrupt.” Some leader.

Romney’s business experience is confined to making money for himself and his associates. THAT DOES NOT TRANSLATE INTO HELPING THE COUNTRY.

Eddie: I know he has the ability to turn around this financial debacle that the current regime has gotten us into. We won't like all the things necessary to recover from this debt, but someone with Romney's background can do it.

Teal: Obama has reversed the free-fall we were in due to deregulation of Wall Street banks. It has taken four years to see light and we are well on our way. You are naïve if you think any president could have done better considering what Bush got us into.

Furthermore, Romney is so hawkish, that he may well start another war with Iran. If Gore had gotten into office, you can bet we would not have gone into Iraq.

Eddie: But, on the minus side, he never was a "Community Organizer", never took drugs or smoked pot, never got drunk, did not associate with communists or terrorists, nor did he attend a church whose pastor called for God to damn the US.

Teal: You are suggesting that “Community Organizer” is somehow spurious? Obama was not paid to be a community organizer. That was a genuine volunteer effort. He worked very hard to help the poor of Chicago reverse bad fortune. He worked tirelessly and made a difference.

If you want an insight into Romney’s young days, see my next post about a college event that shows a side of Romney I would never honor.

Anyway, G. W. Bush was a recovering alcoholic. But you knew that. G. W. Bush was a failure in business. But you knew that. G. W. Bush was elected by a politicized Supreme Court. But you knew that.

Meanwhile, Republican state legislatures throughout the country are trying to disenfranchise blacks, the poor, the Hispanics, students, and seniors from voting because they suspect these would be Democratic voters. The Republicans CANNOT WIN A FAIR FIGHT. This appears to be okay with you.
If you want a better America, the change you should seek is in YOU.

Comments:

I was disgusted when Romney tried to say his tax rate "would have been higher" if you took into account his donations to charity. His charity is nearly all the Mormon Church. The federal government does not support the Mormon Church, so why would we count his donations as tax? It is an allowed deduction, but one I think the government should begin restricting since many religions seem to be antithetical to broad government aims of benefiting the general public without exclusion.

I personally object to subsidizing any religious institution since I think they were all invented. I grant you that there are many who survive by believing in God, and I think they have a right to do so. But I think organized religion leads to suppression of the rights of others, as witness the flap about employers who are Catholic having the right to dictate to their female employees what they can and can't have in their health care plan.

As for Mormonism, good grief. Someone just dreamed it up it up and said Jesus had come to America. It has about as much credence as Scientology and I know a good bit about how that started since my late husband was a friend of L. Ron Hubbard's in New York before, as Jay put it, he got into "his flowing robe stage."

Ed, my husband now, said we should start a religion -- get 10 people to come over for brunch every Sunday morning, preach something for a few minutes, have a good time and get a tax break.

Romney with his good looks might be the first - only? - Republican candidate who is actually sexy. McCain? Either Bush? Nixon? On the other hand, Democrat candidates are almost all hot. Well, maybe not Johnson or Carter, but you get the point.

I continue to think that Romney's "good looks" are incredibly flawed because his expressions do not reflect a good character. He always looks phony to me. His chuckles are mechanical. His empathy is vacant. Everyone blethers
family man" -- sorry THAT'S NOT ENOUGH.

not to me, not to me. Sexy to me is in the brain. And Romney's brain is definitely not sexy. I look at Romney and all I see is one of those little groom figures on top of the wedding cake. ewww.

Very well argued!

Eddie, you needed to hear this. Thank you Teal. There have been so many
lies circulated about Obama.

Obama = Socialist

@tealstar - I'll drive the bus for those who "won't" work.

@greatmartin - I am not accusing you of being un-American...just Obama!
reply by eddie on Oct 11, 2012 8:11 AM ()
Truly enlightened political thinking has observed that the best government for a country is a combination of socialism and capitalism -- a system of checks and balances that encourages free enterprise and at the same time does not throw its weak and vulnerable citizens under the bus. Your equation is simple-minded. Why am I not surprised?

And anyone who doesn't vote for Romney is not an American??? And you don't use anything sponsored/paid for by the government???? Come on Eddie you aren't a stupid person but don't call millions of people unAmerican or socialists because of politics---that's beneath you!
