Another Movie List

Jeri (Elderjane) just posted her favorite movies. Here’s my partial list. All my movies have happy endings. The main criteria is that at the end of the movie, you feel emotionally satisfied. Tip: Never watch a movie that leaves you feeling saddened and suicidal.

Bell, Book and Candle (Kim Novak, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Lemmon, Elsa Lanchester, Ernie Kovacs, Hermione Gingold) A family of witches in a New York apartment building meet a publisher. Kim decides she wants him, bewitches him. Kovacs is superb as an alcoholic writer.

Here Comes Mr. Jordan (remade as Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty.) (Robert Montgomery, Evelyn Keyes, Claude Rains) Montgomery, a fighter, dies in the ring but it’s a mistake. Rains, his Heavenly guide, has to find him another body so he can live out his years.

Angel on My Shoulder (Paul Muni, Claude Rains, Anne Baxter) Muni, a thug, is released from prison and murdered by his partner. He looks exactly like a respected judge, so the devil, Rains, puts Muni into the judge’s body so he can destroy the judge. Baxter is the judge’s love interest. Muni falls in love with her and thwarts the devil.

The Shawshank Redemption (Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman) Robbins is wrongly imprisoned for the murder of his cheating wife. He is a talented financial banker and helps guards and prisoners with their money problems. The warden uses him as his accountant and has another prisoner killed because he has information that will free Robbins. Robbins digs a tunnel behind a poster on his cell wall and crawls threw the sewer into open water. He mails incriminating material to the newspaper and successfully flees to Mexico, after emptying the warden’s hidden bank accounts. The warden kills himself.

Ghost (Patarick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg) Swayze is murdered by a thug hired by his best friend because he has, without knowing it, information that will expose the friend to prosecution. Goldberg is a storefront medium, unaware of her genuine ability to communicate with ghosts. Swayze can’t pass to the next level because he must first solve his own murder. Goldberg helps him.

All About Eve (Bette Davis, Ann Baxter, Gary Merrill, George –- my hero -- Sanders) Bette Davis is a fading stage star and she and Gary Merrill, her producer/director, are in love. She befriends Ann Baxter, a stage door wannabe actress -- and soon Baxter takes over her life. This is the movie where Davis says, in her signature rasp, “Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.”

Charlie Varick (Walter – my other hero -- Matthau) Matthau is a bank robber and robs a mob bank by mistake. His partner is found and murdered. Matthau outsmarts the mob. He is brilliant, as always.

Hopscotch (Walter Matthau) Matthau is a CIA spy put into a desk job by his idiotic boss, Ned Beatty. To get even, he empties his security file, disappears, and writes a tell-all memoir that he sends to all the major powers. Soon they are all hunting him. He fakes his suicide and retires with his former lover, Glenda Jackson.
