Letterman Et Al
I am not as militant about sexual lapses as some. I don’t mind if Letterman had relationships with his staff members as long as they were consensual. In my experience, many young girls, I was once one of them, are easily drawn to men of prominence and charisma. They sometimes throw themselves at these figures. Finding a guy, who is big in the company, or in some showy profession – entertainment (or politics) who is not tempted hourly by some female hopeful is rare indeed. What kind of saint should you be to say no all the time?
As for the women in such situations, there is an acknowledged dynamic that, of course there may be a mutual attraction, the guy should refrain because of the possibility that his position of authority is unduly coercive. Well, if there is a woman who has been approached by her boss who thinks she will lose her job if she says no, that should be a no-brainer. If you are going to blow the whistle, do it sooner rather than later. Oh, wait, that takes courage and integrity. To give in to a relationship you don’t want in order to keep your job, is not much better than being a call girl. (Like the girl told the judge who asked her, sympathetically, how she got into “such a life,†“Gee, judge, just lucky, I guess.â€
As for the moral aspects of liaisons when either person is married, that’s private, personal, and ought to concern the rest of us not at all.
I was always troubled by the pressure Hillary got from women to leave Bill because of his conduct. She chose to stay. Was she wrong? Aren’t such decisions extremely personal? It’s like those who stand on the sidelines and say, “Let’s you and him fight.â€
I would also bet that if we shined a light on the private life of 90 percent of our public figures, we might find more than we want (or ought) to know, unless of course this conduct impacts on the rest of us in some detrimental way.
And I personally think that if G.W.B. had just gotten a blow job, we might not be in Iraq.
Just an opinion.
xx, Teal
P.S. Don't you think there ought to be a category for sex in the topic list?
