Getting Closer to Normal

Our friend Toni called to learn how Ed is doing. She said her house was full of smoke because she had been making chicken soup for Ed, nodded off, and burned the soup. I reminded Ed that being ditzy was an equal opportunity affliction and he shouldn’t be so hard on me. Toni promised to try again with the soup, just not right away. Toni is super talented, a fine painter, was born in Germany, speaks several languages, travels the world on a whim, but is a little spacey. I love her to pieces.

Ed is improving on the antibiotic and is eating again. Sol is spending her nights here as well and added her older calico cat to the household today. Sol is renting in a house and the landlord was taking care of Monet, but the kitty was getting separation anxiety. Monet is super shy, buries her head in Sol’s armpit when anyone else is near. But she let me hold her. Monet and Sasha are now bonded and play together. Sol will sit on the pool deck with each in turn, otherwise keeping them in the spare bedroom and they don’t mind. There is a connecting little hallway to the guest bathroom where the kitty litter and kitty dishes are. A pocket door encloses the space and keeps them from roaming the house and encountering the fearsome Max. Ziggy is just curious. Max hisses. Anyway, the kitten would doubtless get into mischief. She’s super athletic and jumped on to the highboy. It is five times her height. How did she do that? Maybe from the bed.

Ed complained about his slow recovery. I told him he should be grateful to have a wake-up call without the ultimate consequence. For instance, he would often skip lunch because of his many appointments. Well, if you want your blood sugar to be a problem, that’s an excellent way to do it. Last night he said he was afraid to go to sleep since his two episodes with hypoglycemic shock happened in the middle of the night. Now we are monitoring his blood sugar several times a day, ditto blood pressure.

Ed has long planned to modify his obligations and become solely a fiduciary and wind out guardian work. There would not be tons of mail flooding in, less running around, and right up his alley, since he is very good with financial management. This change would cut down on the physical effort of monitoring his wards through constant trips to facilities, and also taking them to the doctor. I might add, other guardians hire people to pay the bills, file mail that must be kept, take wards to doctor appointments, and charge accordingly. I don’t think they get as close to their people as Ed does to his.

Ed sent me to our bank to make guardian deposits – he keeps several guardian accounts there – they have missed seeing him and wanted to know where he was. It’s nice that the bank has such a personal connection with its customers. They all greet me warmly when I drop by. As much as I love city living, this kind of connection rarely happens in large cities. And behind the bank? Woods. How nice is that?

I had a weird event Friday night. I took a mid-evening nap, and awoke and looked at the clock and thought it said 9:30. Oh, I’m missing Rachel Maddow. So I went into the family room to put that TV on and not disturb Ed. I seem to remember watching Rachel. However, I fell asleep sitting up and I awakened to MSNBC’s weekend programming. I turned the set off and checked the time. It was 3:30 in the morning. Really? I napped sitting up for 3 hours?
I remember as a teen that I actually sleep walked and awakened one night sitting at our kitchen table, with my head on my arms. Another time I awakened lying on the living room sofa. This event had that kind of feeling.
