There were three letters in today’s News-Press mentioning my Op-Ed – two attacked my position on Zimmerman and one was in favor. This reflects the 2 to 1 political climate of this area.
The writer who supported me once phoned me in response to a piece I wrote that appeared in the features section – it was about the abysmally low level of “music†in the local cafes and bars. He loved it. Now that I see him defending my position again, I think I’ll look him up and invite him over. Precious few intelligent, progressive types around that I can afford to ignore one.
The dissenting letters were decently written – they weren’t the products of tattooed wunderkinds. It is difficult to explain to people how someone with a lifetime of experience and good insights, and very good antenna, can know without definitive proof that someone is a racist, but I do. One look at Zimmerman is all it takes.
Years ago, there was a case of a surrogate mother who reneged on her agreement and didn’t want to give up the baby (nor the money she got), and it was her egg and the dad’s sperm. I think Whitehead was her name. I saw her photo in the paper and the first thing I thought was why, when the prospective parents had their first interview with her, did they not run screaming from the room? There was a venality about that face that was frightening.
So I stand by my impressions.
My new piece not printed yet.
Ed very amused at his newly controversial wife.
