20 Years of Storage Sloth

My computer, on a desk in our bedroom, uses Ed’s printer in another room. I keep getting error messages -- "your connection to the printer has been lost." Trouble shooting often doesn't solve this. My techie pal, Nadine, came over, removed the printer program and re-installed it and then it couldn’t be located. Ed said I could print if I e mailed it to him @hpeprint.com, and that works. But when I tried to print a chart I use, it came out in 4 point type.I gave up. I thought, ok, I will recreate the chart in Ed’s computer, but his Word program is all f’d up. Can see documents but can’t work on them.

Ed said, snarl, ok ok ok, buy a printer. So I did. My desk has a printer space that I was using for other things, so I set about making room for the printer. Also, I have files everywhere and I decided it was time to organize. I confiscated a rolling file stand Ed had filled with guardian stuff and hadn’t used in 4 years. He has hired a woman to come in and file (poor dear) and she can take care of whatever was in that stand. The drawers are all different colors. How fun is that. When the house is decluttered, we are giving a party. I’m serious.

In the corner of the bedroom, where my desk is,was a spiral stainless steel shoe caddy. It leans when it is filled. That’s why it is in a corner. I have learned to hate it. So I removed it, and dealt with the shoes by throwing a few out, filling a box with high heeled wonders (the dear dead days of elegant dresses) I no longer wear and plan to donate the shoes and the stand to the Beacon of Hope, a charity re-sale shop. (P.S. I buy tops for tiny people in that shop. They always have something I can use and it is in mint condition. $3 for an Anne Taylor top never worn. How can you go wrong?)
More shoes were in my closet in a once-elegant shoe storage unit – it had a zipper that went belly up. It contained shoes I hadn’t worn in years. I cleaned it out, making room for stuff from the spiral stand. When I took the shoes out, I noticed bug debris. Oh, shit. I decided to keep a 3-inch heel pair in black silk. Ya never know. When I wear these with long black dress pants, everyone thinks I am tall. I love that. But only for a party at home. I’m not walking anywhere in these.

Then I have magazine holders tucked in and around the desk that I had filled with files. That was next. I’m telling you, this printer has propelled me into a major project. I found my art scribble file full of drawings made over the years on typewriter paper. Some should have been done in oil, but I never got around to that. Also, working in oils means a dedicated space. As big as this house is, there is no space for an easel and peripherals. I may photograph my random art (because I think some of it is interesting) in a collage arrangement and post the photo(s). Nadine has to help. My phone takes pictures, but I don’t know what to do after that.

Onward … Rick, the owner of The Plumber’s Plumber, came over, got on the roof with helper, and cleared out the clog and said a longer term solution, costing more, could be put off because this would last a while. He was really nice.

Do I ever identify with this post! I moved to a new condo 6 weeks ago, and my weeks and weeks of sorting and tossing out and packing were such a trial of the damned. How thrilled I am to have all that over. Lesson learned. No more keeping stuff that I am not actively using. Thank heaven for resale shops.

I am a reasonable packrat because I do take charge every couple of years and get rid of stuff. Ed keeps everything, and keeps buying stuff. He forgets what he has and buys more. I bought tilted bins that I have put on the dresser top along one wall. Now you can see what's in them and he is actually putting stuff away (although he doesn't actually always fold the shirt up when he does that). I did not another project today that I will write about.

Admirable...meanwhile I can't get my closet organized.

What I've done is just a couple of projects. All our other closets and drawers are desperate too. Edward now hangs his clothes on doorknobs.

Must be in the air! Jenn and I are throwing stuff out and giving away the farm. Ha!
I'm glad the plumbing had an acceptable resolution.

I am delirious to have my kitchen back. Not being able to rinse things turns out to be major.

Yay, clear drains! And decluttering, how admirable. I should go check on what I can get rid of, especially since I must go get some more stuff out of the storage unit.

I worked all day and am only half done. There are three dozen categories. Also some items that are sentimental, like a file card for a dear friend who is gone. It's all his data. I'm keeping it. Color me dysfunctional.
