August 29, 2008. Exactly three years ago today Katrina stormed in and tore us up, and it's taken me 2 1/2 years to get everything back on track and fixed up kinda lopsidedly back like it used to be. I know I've written ad infinitum and ad nauseum about Katrina, but that's okay--it's my blog.
Now today, my guts are in a knot about Gustavo headed this way. Folks are in a semi-panic mode, it's catching. I don't watch the news, my nerves won't take it. FEMA, MEMA, Red Cross, all state and federal agencies are on their toes ready to act.I got a pre-recorded call from Gov. Haley Barbour yesterday where he's warning all citizens to GET PREPARED. Well, I had just got back from Walmart in Lucedale--they were out of gallon jugs of water and cases of bottled water.
The manager at Wallymart was in high dudgeon, assuring folks two 18 wheeler loads of water are coming in during the night. Same in the two Walmarts in Hattiesburg--out of water. Generators are snapped up as soon as they arrive there, and at Loew's etc. I loaded up on Vienna sausage and crackers and tuna salad and other non perishables.
Being a list maker, I wrote down everything I needed to do (I'm making a list and checking it twice, Santa). Like making sure the cell phone's battery is charged, the laundry all done, the car fueled up, taking down anything outside that the wind could blow away or blow down. There's still tall trees behind my house that could topple onto the house--too late to do anything about it now.
Got batteries in the radio, flashlights, and battery powered fans and lanterns. . Put out a table to put it all on in easy reach. I called our water board man to make sure he's got the propane tank full to keep the generator going to pump water --at least enough to flush toilets. No power was bad, but no water after Katrina was awful. Sorry Texas but I hope Gustav and Hannah and their ilk comes your way and leave us alone. Mississippians have already had our storm of the century-- just three years ago. susil
