Frackin' Shale

The economy may be in a slump everywhere else, but here in the vicinity of Floresville,  it's one of of the few places in the United States where it's a boomtown. It's all due to shale oil. Workers have come from all over the U.S. to work on the fracking and processing of shale rock. No refinery, just the "harvesting" of the shale rock.

There's a lot of controversy about fracking. It involves as far as I have heard, the drilling into oil bearing shale rock and pumping in water (from a beleagured aquifer) to help break up the rock. There's a lot of controversy about using precious aquifer water, plus the drilling companies aren't too concerned about effluent and waste disposal etc. But! Having folks coming from all over has transformed this little town.

Growth is rap[id, new hotels/motels, eateries and everything needed to serve the influx of workers.Prices have gone up with the boom--price gouging? A bunch of grapes at the HEB grocery store was $8.00!!  Everything at that store is frightfully expensive. Not much bettet at the Walmart. It's  said the shale oil boom will probably last about five years. That's hearsay. After it's all over, bust will follow the boom.
bye for now, love to everyone, susil

Fracking is already an environmental polluting disaster and it's only going to get worse.

Hi marta; well, that's for sure!

$8 for grapes is outrageous. It's what happens when the "free market" mentality ignores its impact.

I teal; I didn't have glasses on and thought I was seeing wrong, but no, those grapes were $8.00! Everything here is very expensive, picking the pockets of the shale oil worker.( and everybody else.)

Hi teal; I didn't have my glasses on and thought I'd seen the price wrong, but no, it was $8.00! My daughter spends a lot of money on groceries etc. Really exaggerated prices-yikes!

We have experienced the boom and bust cycles but it is outrageous that
prices are so high. How close are you to San Antonio? I think I would go
elsewhere to shop. The last big bust had all the oil men selling off their
gold and Rolex watches for just what they could get.

HI JERI; we're 30 miles from San Antonio, and I was surprised to know there's no grocery stores in town here except HEB and Walmart--these two put all the smaller stores out of business, here and in all the other towns neqrby, so people just bite the bullet and shop there.

Coincidence!!. Here in todays paper its reported that an oil field has been found near an opal mining town, it said it would be big enough when in production to supply the whole of australia with enough to export oil as well .Also shale oil can be produced using the latest technology ,m the intend drilling 2 vertical holes and then a horizoltle one connected the 2 vertical. there is no water in that country at all
comment by kevinshere on Jan 24, 2013 1:18 AM ()
Hi Kev; that makes sense, but I reckon where water is available the frackers will use it instead of the latest technology! Stay well down under!

I think fracking is why N. Dakota is having such a boom time too. There's a movie about it that was just released with Matt Damon - haven't seen it but maybe I will. I wish I knew more about it.

Hi Karen; There have been some small earthquake tremors hereabouts, and I can't help but wonder if it's go anything to do with fracking.

My Aunt lived in Battle Mountain, Nevada, and over the decades I've seen that town go through boom and bust, driven by the price of gold, so I can imagine what's going on there by you.

Hi Laura; The scuttlebuttr is that the influx of workers has brought crime, drugs , ladies of the night, etc. Everything that accompanies a boom.

It will be sad when it is over and the people that live there will be left high and dry
comment by larryb on Jan 23, 2013 6:42 PM ()
Hi larry, There are expensive new homes going up all over the place, and some of the oil workers are buying homes that they'll try to get rid of when they move on--it'll really be a bust.

They want to do the same thing around here. Pennsylvania is already a literal dump in some places because of first coal and now fracking. It's not just "water"! It's millions of gallons per well and it comes back contaminated--left in pools that eventually contaminate peoples' wells. Naturally those who stand to profit are for it, but we are fighting it. In this case, it might actually be a good thing that NY City owns land here for their drinking water supply. They spend millions here to avoid spending billions down there on filtration. So they should be, out of necessity, on the side of the locals for once.

Hi JJ; Karnes County, the next county over is really upset over their water supply being used up and are having to dig new wells for drinking water. The big companies doing the fracking don't give a sh*t.

That's sad for those who plan on staying for the duration. Hope you can afford to eat!

Hi M M; To be honest, It's difficult because groceries are so high. At the first of the year HEB increased it's prices by 1/3!
