Feeling Green

Yesterday morning at 6am the phone rang--it was my cousin Ellie. She and her brother Bubba were halfway to Lucedale to the U Pick 'Em farm which was opening that morning, when the water pump gave out in her Corolla. I went to the rescue and fetched them back to their house.
Later in the day they went on to the farm and Ellie gave me some veggies she had dug and picked as a "thank you." New potatoes, a sackful of onions, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, cukes. I got up early this Sunday morning and peeled 10 lbs. of onions to store in the fridge. The moist brown dirt of George County covered the onions. Messy; that's why I did it out on the carport.
I was wearing latex gloves, and after the onion peeling, went with gloved hands and scattered Sevin dust at the backside of the house to try to foil any ants trying to sneak in through the slab.
I stuffed peppers for dinner and made salad out of the other stuff. I'm feeling positively green after eating all those fresh green veggies;--Mmmm, good!          Susil

In California I stored onions in my garage this way:
1. Find an woman's pantyhose or sheer stocking.
2. Drop the first onion down into the hose, all the way to the bottom.
3. Tie a knot just above the first onion.
4. Then repeat the process with all the onions.
5. Nail or tie the hose full of onions from a rafter or high place so none of the hose/onions touch any surfaces.
6. When you need an onion, snip it off just above the onion but below the knot.
The air circulating around the mesh keeps the vermin and pressure off the onions. They last much longer this way.

When I buy (other than onions) a veggie we don't often eat,
I procrastinate and don't fix it and it spoils and I throw
it out. Washing and peeling veggies is something I avoid
when I can. Help.

Sounds great. There's nothing like getting
a little dirt on your hands, epecialy when
it comes off veggies.
