Ode to Billy Joe

Someone reminded me this is the date of a famous song, Ode To Billy Joe, written and sung by Bobbie Gentry. To wit: "It was the third of June.... another sleepy dusty Delta day....I was out chopping cotton and my brother was bailing hay... At dinnertime we stopped and walked back to the house to eat....and Mama said I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge....today Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Talahatchie Bridge."
This song was famous in the days of 8-track tapes and vinyl records. I'd play Bobbie Gentry and my daughters and I would sing along. We knew every word to that song.
This year the cotton has been planted in fields along Highway 15 and Highway 42. You don't see people chopping cotton anymore-machinery does it all. But hot humid days and cotton reminds me of another song from the opera "Porgy and Bess," Summertime..and the living is easy..fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high..Oh, your daddy's rich and your mama's good lookin..so hush little baby, don't you cry."
Bye from Susil, here on the third of June.

I don't think anyone can beat Janis Joplin's version of "Summertime."
