Blogger Laura, (troutbend) sent me a box of paperback mysteries and the one I'm reading now is a slim 160 page book, and is so enjoyable. It's "No Way To Treat A Lady" by William Goldman.
One of the characters named Pete has a bar he decorated in sports memorabilia hoping to attract the local men in to drink. Instead, to his chagrin, it becomes the hangout of the local old ladies he calls "biddies." One biddie he really dislikes is a gal named Sadie. Here's how he describes her:
"Talk talk talk all the time,at the top of her voice, and if there was one dirty limerick in the world she didn't know and hadn't told eight times out loud, well----and the way she dressed, a face like a foot and boobs out to here, and she always wore blouses or sweaters that buttoned down the front.
Or that's what they were for, the buttons, but Sadie didn't use them much. She'd mouth off with her boobs damn near swaying in the breeze, and every night, at least once she'd eye some single man and holler "Satisfy me!" as loud as she could. "I ain't had a pair of pants in my house for a month now, think you're man enough?" And of course the guy would bolt his drink and take off, and Sadie'd shout "Chicken" until he was halfway down the block..."
Now that's entertaining writing! susil
