Moving to Manhattan

Our Mississippi governor Haley Barbour says he is going to protest the decision by the Center for Animal Disease and Research to relocate their facility from Plum Island New York to Manhattan Kansas.

Flora Mississippi was in the running for this new research center. Barbour was all for it--jobs jobs, jobs was the mantra. I bet if some facility wanted to bring the E-Bola
virus here, the most deadly virus known, the guv would be all for it, even if it meant only five jobs for locals.

At Manhattan Kansas the research facility will be built in or near a university which is why they "won" the honor of having deadly animal disease organisms being studied there.
The locals were given no guarantee that organisms would not escape--there have been several occasions of this disaster happening at Plum Island. Why not just build a bigger better facility at Plum Island instead of taking a chance of catastrophe in mid America?

If it had come to MS, the governor would have moved to Manhattan NY to be safe, or maybe Manhattan TX to be near his crony Dubya, if there is such a place.

I have been in Manhattan Kansas. Kansas has miles and miles of wheatfields. Most of the cows seem to be in feed lots which are so stinky you can't even begin to imagine it. Now they are getting wind farms and they are sorely needed in Oklahoma too.

Ouch--I don't much like your type of governors. I actually like mine--even voted for him this time around-- a Republican! Recently re-elected, he's "My Man Mitch" Daniels. Crossword material?

Gosh, when I read your title, I thought you were moving to Manhattan! The thought of organisms (deadly ones) is really frightening!

Now I know perhaps a half dozen other governors by name (the notorious ones-Palin, Rob B., etc.- come to mind). Bet you can't name Indiana's!!

Greetings, Sue! Just getting back in mybloggers gear after several weeks with a great pal in Tennessee. A much needed break. Happy to check back in with you. Hope all is well.

I recall your earlier post about this and I'm very glad Mississippi won't be graced with the presence of the lab. Moving away from isolated Plum Island is a crazy idea. Maybe they'll build a concrete tomb for this dangerous lab, a la Chernobyl.

Manhattan KS is the location of Kansas State Univ. My first wife's father went to the KSU Veterinarian College. He became a vet and when he retired had the largest small animal practice in all of New York state. We toured the school and the vet school once and it impressed me. When politics is involved, a payoff of some kind is in store. Somebody in Kansas was owed for a favor. Haley Barbour didn't offer enough in exchange perhaps.
