Prop 8 = Free Speech? 20081025

Kitty and I were out doing some errands this morning. On the way home, I saw a sign, "Prop 8 = Free Speech" and I thought, "huh?"

I looked up more about that concept and also found that supposedly "Prop 8 = Less Government". I don't see how free speech has anything to do with it.

The proposed amendment is quite short:
SECTION 1. Title
This measure shall be known and may be cited as the "California Marriage Protection Act."

SECTION 2. Article I. Section 7.5 is added to the California Constitution to read:
Sec. 7.5. Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.

Free speech is not in there, but it will add government restrictions to marriage. That's more government, not less.

The concern about free speech is apparently because church leaders and teachers won't be able to continue to preach against same-sex marriages if they are legitimate.

After I wrote the above, I went for a walk and saw this house down the street.

I've always found it really curious that two people could be legally married in one state but not another. Gay marriage is legal here in Canada and it doesn't differ from province to province. We didn't vote on it, either, now that I think about it. I do remember a lot of churches getting their panties in a knot, though. It was the issue that made my parents leave their church altogether.

Phew! Thanks for explaining the free speech aspect of it. I think churches would still be able to preach their beliefs and they won't be force to perform rites they do not support. I love the paired signs. I gotta wonder what their discussions are like.

I have several friends who will be affected by that prop. I'm curious what Californians really think.
