Oh Well, Basically 20081104

I didn't get nearly as much done this morning as I wanted. Thought I would login to work and deal with emails, but looking up last minute osteo details took too much time.

The Dr appt wasn't such a life-changing event. He said that hemochromatosis may still be an issue, but my type may be a rare form, so I should go to a hematologist and have my liver examined, basically.

He encouraged me to continue with yoga and tai ji because they have other benefits, even if they don't help with bone density. I had basically planned to eliminate them because there is only so much time in the day and I'm supposed to do weight-bearing exercise first and foremost.

He said at this stage at my age, I don't have any restrictions on my exercise or activities. Part of his message is that I shouldn't worry too much about it yet, but continue to exercise and watch the calcium and vit D.

The exercise information in the books I mentioned to him are for postmenopausal women because they are the primary audience for those books.

He suggested looking in the library for books on men and osteoporosis, but they don't have anything. A search on amazon only came up with textbooks.

My appt was at the hospital. This turtle has been out on the corner in front as long as I've visited the hospital. There used to be a gravel path around the turtle, but they replaced most of that with grass and put in benches. The plaque next to it is not about the turtle. That green stuff in the mulch is something that the gardeners sprayed, herbicide probably.

It would be a pretty impossible question to guess at since you're right...I don't think I've ever written about turtles in my blog.

My grandma liked turtles a lot and I inherited much of her collection when she passed away. So that's part of it.

I grew up near a First Nations' Reservation. My family has a lot of close ties to the First Nations people and I was raised with an especially deep respect for their rituals and beliefs (remember me telling you that "our God" wasn't all that traditional? I come from a "take what you want and leave the rest" philosophy). Most of their teachings center around animals and animal mysticism. Turtle is one of my totem animals. I have always identified with her medicine and her lessons. So, yes, "mother earth and healing" is part of why I like turtles, too.

I also just think they're pretty cool.

Why do you like them? I'm guessing it's not a mother earth thing.

Is it possible there is no underlying disease/condition that is causing the osteoporosis? Could it be that it's just the way you were born? Make sure your doctor looks into every possibility, just in case.

At least you know you are doing what you can. Do you do yoga at home? That might help time wise.

I have been doing Tai Chi for quite some time now.
This is four days a week along with my tennis playing.
do you like Tai Chi?I do and very good for your balance and how about
mediation there, this is combined with our class.
Tell me more about this when you have a chance.

Why is there a turtle there?

You should look into some of the books on male menopause. They would likely cover that topic. It would not be a whole book, but there should be sections on it.

I hate the pressure of being first to comment...

Not a life changing event, but did you at least find some comfort? It sounds like you're on the right track even if the track doesn't (yet) have a name.

Turtle...mother earth...carries the world on her back...healing.
