Iron 20081016

I had some back and forth with the lab the last couple of days, but finally resolved the issue of the Dr's new blood-work orders. His office was faxing the request to the wrong number, which I think is odd, because they must have done this before. The lab hasn't changed numbers.

Anyway, in my present state of mind, I was more curious and anxious to find out what the tests were and get them taken care of than to go to karate class, so I bailed on class last night.

The interesting test is for iron overload. It's something that happens in men over about 40 and postmenopausal women, because IF people in those groups have a mutation of one gene, then they can't get iron out of their systems, it builds up, and becomes toxic. The treatment for it is blood letting, so if I have it, I shouldn't let those blood drives slip past :-)

I have none of the usual symptoms, except that it's also associated with osteoporosis. It's also hereditary, so if I knew more about my relatives' health history, I would know if others have it. Oh well.

Dolly and I think that through the vitamins I take, connected to getting sufficient Ca, I'm just getting too much iron, but am not actually overloaded. We will see what the test shows.

In other iron news, at Kitty's after school care program, they were showing the recent "Ironman" movie to the kids the other day. It's a PG13 movie. The kids are all under 12, because otherwise they could be at home. Kitty is 9. Dolly was going to complain about it, but I didn't ask her how that went. Apparently, a number of other parents were going to as well. I know of some parents who don't let their kids watch PG movies without their permission. Any PG13 movie would be right out.

Crossing fingers that you don't have to add more things to your list. So many things to think about when it comes to vitamins. I have to avoid iron for four hours after I take my thyroid hormone supplement. Otherwise the iron will block the absorption of my very necessary supplement. I missed one last Tuesday and I had mood swings for two days. Ack!
Good Luck with your tests and your Osteo research.

I didn't realize they still did blood-letting! I thought that went out 100 years ago!

My mother-out-of-law went through this for a while. They were able to sort it out, and she felt so much better.

Maybe I mixed up the title of the position.I think I meant holistic nutritionist or naturopath. There are so many routes to consider and so many areas of complimentary medicine out there...once you've had time to digest what all of this means for you and your family, of course. I didn't mean to jump the gun.

I'd be angry about the movie, too.Do you have a herbalist in addition to a doctor to advise you about your vitamins, etc? Might be worth checking out if you're still hoping to cover all your bases and make quality of life for yourself the best it can be.

I didn't think it was too bad really... Ironman that is.
Iron overload? Who knew?

I hope that you have good news. Most vitamins do not contain iron now because of the risks of getting too much. What about your diet?
