Ginkgo and Trees 20081129

I went for a walk on Thurs afternoon.

The house kitty-corner from ours has two small ginkgo trees as street trees. They are finally changing colors and dropping their leaves.

Our sweet gum trees still have quite a few of their red leaves too.

I saw one house with a lit-up Christmas tree and some lights in the front yard. There's a house near Kitty's school that has had a lit-up tree for several weeks now. Didn't people used to set up trees on Christmas Eve and take them down after the twelve days of Christmas, i.e., Epiphany? We're not religious, but know the dates. Things seem to have shifted to pre-Christmas, or pre-Thanksgiving, decorating, then the tree gets kicked to the curb on Boxing Day.

I got the "Hallmark Holiday BS" speech from Thom but I smiled big at him and said I still like the xmas spirit. I think the spirit, deep down, is wonderful I just have to ignore the glossy over-coating of commercialism that has been applied year after year.

we always put up the tree early when I was growing up. I liked it though.

Jeez. Bitter much?

It gets earlier and earlier every year. I only hope that it's in an effort to extend the feeling of love and celebration and drag it out a bit.

My tree (fake, pink and glittery) will go up next weekend. That's a single mom extended or creating goodness and making it last.

The ginko leaves are quite beautiful! I know lots of places have trees up already! I guess people are really quite apprehensive about the season in this economy!

Those leaves are an interesting shape. Our neighbor in Las Vegas had his lights up a couple weeks ago, but not yet lighting them up.

We put up the tree (artificial) and decorated before we went away for Thanksgiving. I figure that if I'm going to spend the better part of a day putting the stuff up, we might as well get at least a few weeks out of it. My parents used to leave it up until after New Years, since people would visit for that holiday too, but I don't have the patience. It's all in the box by the 27th of December.
