Talentless Celebrity

I MUST BE more out-of-touch than I thought.  The Age of Celebrity has me totally mystified.  I noticed on CNN.com an item trumpeting what a great coup it is that Oprah Winfrey landed "an exclusive sit-down" with Lindsay Lohan once she is released from her present court-imposed residential drug treatment.
As far as I'm concerned, Lohan is a minor actress with a drug problem and a temper who isn't worth 10% of the media attention she gets.  What's the big deal?  Is our Kardashian besotted society so dumbed down that these maladapted, talentless people capture the imaginations of all the millions of other maladapted, talentless cretins out there?  If these are now our heroes, we're in big trouble.
As "The Greatest Generation" passes away, what have we left?

Our decline and fall started with Presley when a sneer became the epitome of sexuality. It's been all downhill since then. The problem lies with marketers who discovered that the young could spend money, their parents' if not their own, so they geared everything to the adolescent mind, the undeveloped mind, and in doing so, created the perpetuation of their ignorance. Why seek something better when your infantile needs are being glorified and catered to? When I was a teen, I was urged to be a grown-up. That is no longer happening.

I have a theory that people who crave Lindsay Lohan, the Kardashians, etc. are just as f**ked up as Lindsay Lohan, the Kardashians, etc., and need confirmation that there are others as screwed up as they are.

How scary is that...?

I saw this on Bling when I opened my computer this morning. It is a mystery to me why celebrities are idolized. When they changed the name of manic depressive to bipolar disorder it seems to me to have made it a
lot more popular. Social Security Disability is a wonderful thing for those who truly need it but it has become a way of life.

Everything is a "disorder" these days.

What we have left is the Goofiest Generation, driven by consumerism, sucked in by marketing ploys, living on SSI disability for their alleged ADD and ADHD and bi-polar conditions.

Your assessment may be optimistic...

Agreed. It might be a good thing to practice to revoke all attention -- avoid watching or reading any of that trash. But the rest of the world will keep watching, sadly.

"People" magazine way outsells anything that requires real thought...
