Five Life Rules

Simple rules to guide you through life:

If
in doubt, don’t
.  Doubt is your safety net telling you it’s not a good time to jump.
Believe it.  Don’t be like the redneck
whose last words were, “Watch this!”

Believe
none of what you hear & only half of what you see
.  Hearsay is generally disallowed in court for
a reason, and with today’s technological advances in the manipulation &
falsification of images, half may be too generous an allowance.

If
you have to choose between multiple versions of an event, always believe the
one where people are at their worst
.  Human nature is, after all, human nature, and
it has been worsening of late.

When
someone often says “To tell you the truth” they’re probably not
.  This is particularly applicable if they are
trying to sell you something.

Trust
first impressions
.  You have developed instincts during your life that are based upon
valuable experience. This is where your brain & your gut work together for
your benefit.

Thanks for referral. I love books about behavior. Maybe I can get a Kindle copy from the liberry.

Many years ago a therapist I had at the time told me to trust my first impressions (i.e., my instincts). Apparently I get it right the first time but second guess myself in an effort to know/be friends with people.

You should read Malcolm Gladwell's book "blink." Subtitled "the power of thinking without thinking," here's a quote: "...we need to accept the mysterious nature of our snap judgments. We need to respect the fact that it is possible to know without knowing why we know and accept that -- sometimes -- we're better off that way."

I agree with you with regard to cynicism. Experience has shown me it is warranted more often than not.

"Cynics are right nine times out of ten." H.L. Mencken
"No matter how cynical you get, it is impossible to keep up." Lily Tomlin

Ok, none of what we hear, half what we see...and if you have allergy problems, can't even trust what you think you smell.

I forgot about that. My wife lost her sense of smell a few years back and has to ask me to smell stuff.

Sometimes we can't even trust ourselves because our self preceptions are
skewed. These are good rules. We get a little cynical with age but I
try to fight it.

I understand your take but I do nothing to ward off my cynicism. It is a protective barrier I don't mind displaying.
