Doves

image
Today I discovered that what I thought were mourning doves flocking to my bird seed are in reality something else: Eurasian collared-doves! They look alike but for the fact that the collared-doves are noticeably larger than the mourning doves. They also have a conspicuous black collar on their hind necks.

Sometimes they will attempt to get seed from one of my four bird feeders but, being rather large and somewhat clumsy birds, they more often just get it off the ground where it falls from the birds on the feeders messily pushing it off as they feed. But they appear to be very territorial toward their own kind. I see them spending more time chasing away other collared-doves than actually eating.
They comingle with the smaller birds without apparent problem.

I see them roosting high up in the junipers and they will sometimes startle me when I startle them. I’ll walk past the tree and there will be a sudden thrash of wings as the previously unseen collared-dove takes off noisily from the limb of the tree.

I guess these could be considered our pigeons.

Brother of a childhood friend kept pigeons. From time to time, he'd choose one, wring its neck, and fry it up for lunch. Wonder if he married. Love all birds. Hiss-boo on anyone who doesn't.

I miss the cardinals from Fla. There aren't any out here in SW Utah.

I hope Fancy Pants is not tempted to eat them. They are pretty birds.

The only time I've seen them caught was by Bart, who usually only can catch the smaller birds.

Do they make that dove cooing sound?

From a cite on the collared-dove: their koo-KOO-kook is "shorter, more impatient, and more frequent than that of the mourning dove."

Prettier than any pigeon I've every seen and they probably taste better too!

Has to be tastier than the common pigeon.

Eurasian?! Just another example of Obama's failed immigration policy! We need to secure our borders.

It is now deemed an invasive species. It entered the U.S. through FLORIDA (you might have guessed!) and has now spread as far west as California and as far north as Alaska, the Great Lakes & Nova Scotia. At least the Cubans have pretty much stayed in South Florida.
