One must realize that seeing is not always believing. What we literally see is not always what we get.
I'm talking about global warming here. With the Copenhagen gathering coming up, it's in the news.
Many Americans dismiss global warming for many reasons, one of which is they don't feel or witness the consequences first hand. It's been a "cool" year in North America. But only in the U.S. and Canada. The rest of the world has seen record breaking high temperatures. This year ranks in the top five warmest temps recorded--the decade the hottest ever. The Midwest is currently in the throes of a December blizzard. No global warming there, the naysayers proclaim.
Certainly, Al Gore is no hero to them.
However, the evidence is overwhelming. NBC news showed the shrinking glaciers of the Andes Mts. last night. In our own Glacier N.P. the 90 glaciers in 1915 has shrunk to 15. The one I saw in 2004 (Grinnell) was so puny, I was surprised it was still classified as a real glacier. Before and after photos are staggering.
Many scientific articles have been written claiming evidence of a warming planet. "Specials" on television, such as NOVA, National Geographic, Discover, etc. periodically present information on global warming. The "proof" is everywhere. Yet the public refuses to believe and accept the facts.
(The same thing can be said about evolution, but I won't go there.)
No matter what the evidence shows, there will always be the blind refuters. T'was ever thus. Good luck Planet Earth and its inhabitants.
