I spent quite a lot of my time this winter doing genealogy research, and when I ran across this: "Joseph Conrad (1780-1844) was buried in Peterson Cemetery, a little north of Potato Creek Methodist Church. This cemetery is back from the road in a field and on a little knoll, very neglected, and almost inaccessible. There are several members of the Conrad family buried there", I knew I had to find it.
So my sister Barbara and I headed out to that and three other cemeteries to search for our lost ancestors. They were all less than 40 miles away from my house. We were successful on half our efforts! We found the Peterson Cem. and three terribly weather-beaten headstones. After much scraping, we deciphered much of the inscriptions. It's pretty exciting to uncover a piece of one's past.
I only wish my ancestors wrote memoirs or some bits of information about their lives, etc. Perhaps they did, and it's been lost, or some other descendant has it. The only memoir I have is from a great grandmother born during the Civil War. What a shame most early settlers didn't think to keep diaries and such for posterity. In any case, I'm happy to at least find some "long lost" graves.
