While wandering across my lawn several days ago, I spied what I thought were corn cobs lying in the grass.
Much to my delight, I quickly realized they were small gray morel mushrooms, usually called "sponges".
For the next couple of days, I searched at near ground level for the elusive little morsels. I probably found around a dozen all total. The gray morels are small and difficult to find. Soon, their cousin, the bigger yellow morels will pop out--maybe even in my very own yard.
I've eaten what I've found in spaghetti sauce, an omelet, and last night, with asparagus. Most tasty, a delicacy without equal.
I scouted around in the woods behind my house yesterday for more, but had no luck. Later today, I'm going with my sister to another woods to "hunt" for big yellows. It still may be too early. If nothing else, it'll be a nice walk in the woods. It's a warm, sunny day, and it's great to be alive.
