Last Saturday night, I decided to go to the local school's "Musical Revue". I usually go, not only to support the arts, but because the programs this small school puts on are very good. There's a surprisingly lot of talent in Rossville's young people.
This year, I didn't particularly like or enjoy the show or performances. For one, the talent was not up to expectations. The high school jazz band was pretty bad, despite my open mind to appreciate their efforts. But that's okay--this isn't Carnegie Hall.
Secondly, it was the "theme" that turned me off: "Back to the Fifties". All the acts and songs were of the musicians and music of the 1950's. You know what that means? Rock 'n Roll-- Elvis, Connie Francis, etc., etc. I didn't like it then, and I like it less now.
It was a "do you remember?" type musical, mostly bad immitations of the real thing. It may have been cute to some, but irritating to me. (I left at intermission.) For some reason, I'm not big on reminisces (sp?). I don't care for reminders of days past--not the 50s, 60s, 70s, even last year. I like living in the present and anticipating the future. "That was then, this is now" is my motto. I don't mean to sound like a fuddy duddy, but I'm pretty tired of Elvis, Buddy Holly, and the likes. I'll just leave it at that.
One exception to my so-called mantra: I went to a nearby town's "Canal Park" on Sunday. Part of the Wabash Canal has been reconstructed with interpretive trails and a visiter's center that takes one back to the early and mid 1800s when the canal was built and used. Now that's history that's worth learning about. The town is rightfully proud of restoring a heritage worthy of recognition. (The town is Delphi, IN if you want to google it.)
