Bluebirds Vs. Wrens

While I was sitting on my porch swing yesterday, I noticed a bluebird exiting his house. Then a wren went in. After several in and outs by the wren, with the bluebird watching, I wondered what the deal was.

Chicks? Whose? So I took a peek by removing the lid. It appears the wren was in the process of taking over the bluebird nest. I cleaned it out and later watched the bluebirds return to building their nest. Weird.

We received 0.3 inches of rain the other evening. Barely enough to dampen the ground, but better than nothing. I'm hoping my well doesn't run dry from watering my garden. It's the original 100 yr old well, brick lined, probably rather shallow. I've never run out of water before, but you never know.

It appears I'll be "berry-less" this year. Drought, late frost, and birds have, in one way or another, decimated straw, rasp, black, and blue berries. I'm bummed out.

Our big local news is that Gov. Mitch Daniels will be the new president of Purdue U. Of course, I don't care.
Plus, the paper was full of looking back over 40 years since Title IX, the anniversary of women sports in school.

Enjoy a great week. Life is good.

It's heartening that you reclaimed the nest for the bluebirds but now I am worried about the homeless wren. Why not put up a second house for the wren?

We had drought conditions too before tropical storm Debby and I am waiting to see if the regular rains will return.

Drought conditions in parts of Oklahoma as well.

It just isn't fair, is it? The south getting all that rain, and us none.

Our weather page in the Tribune had a piece about Illinois being in a drought now. You got more rain than we did. We got none up north but the southern suburbs got a little. We are supposed to get some rain tonight. We shall see. This is a big spread out area. One of the farmers from WI at the market today said they are still putting out their drip hoses. The farmers from MI aren't going to have many peaches or blueberries this year.

I tried to order blueberry plants from Mich. last week, but they said "no shipping" now (too late in the season). I've lost over half of the dozen or so I've planted in the past two years. Rain has eluded us, too.

To fetch a pail of water? Rhyme based on the king and queen of France, I think.

BOO about the berries! I would be bummed as well. We have a well now too, so I would be concerned about running out of water too. Does that happen to other people a lot?

Most wells nowadays are dug deep enough so there's no problem running out of water (and no water bills!). I've considered drilling a new one, but as long as I have water, no reason to waste money.
