Bikes, Marathons and Gyms

With the economy shrinking my net income, I've been forced to make a lot of cut backs. One of them is my morning gym starting the end of next week.

It was a tough call for me as it's one of the few things that pulls me out of bed at 6am weekday mornings to face the day ahead. I've been a member of that gym for 31/2 years and have worked out 558 times as of this morning. Having said that I'm getting a little bored with that workout so putting it on hold right now makes sense. I can always go back in a month or two when I miss it.

Not to mention I have a zillion workout videos I can substitute for my morning routine along with training for the upcoming half marathon in November.

I've been dying to purchase a bike to ride around for fun and to use via the Metro to get to work. Purchasing a bike will save money in gas as well as wear and tear on my 19 year old Caddy. The problem with that is I don't have the funds in hand to get the bike ... until last night.

My mother sent me a check so I could sign up for the half marathon (sign up fee is $75) and fix the car window that broke over Labor Day weekend. She sent more than I needed so I think the extra will easily go towards the new bike.

I also found out on Friday that my friend who works in a bike shop can get me a great deal if I go through his shop. I love my friends! ... and obviously my Mom, too.

It's so cool that my mom is enabling me to continue on my health quest. I'm giddy that she's giving me the money specifically so I can sign up to run a marathon. It means a lot to me to say the least.

So hopefully this weekend I will be the proud owner of a bicycle (my first in twenty years) and the newest runner for the Pasadena Half Marathon.
