West Nile Virus

Dallas County is in the midst of an epidemic of West Nile Virus, which is carried by mosquitos.  Ten deaths have occurred and numerous cases reported with 65 hospitalizations.
50% of the cases reported this summer to the CDC came from Dallas County, so the threat is serious.  Aerial spraying is set to begin tonight and eventually will cover all the suburbs as well.  However, an injunction was filed this morning to prevent the aerial spraying, so the issue is currently on hold.
Ft. Worth opted for ground spraying, but that is much slower and less effective.  So, we shall have to see what develops with this issue, with just about everyone having an opinion about whether the spraying should go forward.
Holly and Bevan are in Destin, Florida where Holly had a rough two-day work week,  Bevan is playing golf, and the girls are boogy boarding.  They have just a tough life!
Amazingly, they ran across their neighbors from across the street, also vacationing there.  Even more unbelievalby, they were staying at the same hotel.  They have a daughter a year older than Bailey and another who just graduated from high school.
I'll be back tomorrow with my Friday report.

We just have to use a mosquito repellent when we go outside. They have not
been as bad here as earlier because they flee the high heat.

That seems to be true everywhere except here in Dallas. Every summer we have deaths from West Nile Virus, although this year has been especially bad.

Doesn't spraying kill ALL insects--bees included? Then no birds. Chernobyl like.

Well, I know there was concern about bees, although I haven't heard any reports that the spraying harms birds.

How frightening. Ya'll keep those mosquitoes down there in Texas. We don't want them. Seriously, I hope they get a handle on the situation soon. What's your opinion about the spraying?

I have mixed emotions about the spraying. Where I live, there hasn't been as serious a problem and mosquitos don't like me as I rarely get a bite. Not so for the rest of my family.

I read about it in hour paper--cover yourself with netting!!!

Mosquitos don't like me. I can't remember the last bite I had. Bevan and the girls really have to be careful, though, as all three are allergic to any kind of bug bite.

Oklahoma has an active dragonfly population; but for some reason, we don't seem to have many here. Maybe they have all been killed spraying for mosquitoes.

We have aerial spraying here on a steady basis. It seems to be effective. As for my solution, I use Bug off on all exposed parts on a daily basis year round even if it is 40 degrees outside. I have been bitten in winter.
