My Wild Dreams

Life & Events > Relationships > Self Deception is Us.

Self Deception is Us.

We all have this trait of being able to FULLY CONVINCE OURSELVES that something
is real or not despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

I have spent my entire life trying not to fall into this pit of self-deception. Yet, I witness it constantly in my life.  There is, for instance, my neighbor who has convinced herself that she has fibromyalgia, because a D.O. told her she did. (Never any follow-up with a rheumatologist)  Now she justifies her drug dependency on hydrocodone and morphine as being necessary because, after all, she has fibromyalgia.
Then, there's someone else I know who refuses to believe  her "husband" ever frequented visiting prostitutes despite his admitting that he did, though not to her.   Of course, he never denied it either.   Now, that's really stretching self-delusion to new limits.
And what about all those who STILL believe, in spite of every single fact disputing it that Obama was not born in the United States; who swear that he is ignoring the Constitution, who avow that he is at best a socialist and at worse a communist.  Common sense dictates that these people are practicing a form of self-deception to justify what they WISH were true, not what the facts clearly support.
The problem with self-deception is that it is nothing more than lying, and the worst kind,  because the person is lying to himself.  In order to justify whatever he WANTS to believe, he ignores the FACTS in favor of LIES.
And have you ever known anyone who could tell just ONE LIE?   Soon he must tell another LIE to justify the first self-deceptive lie,  Before he realizes it, he has told so many lies that he starts to believe them himself.
Then, every person who tries to point out the truth becomes the enemy and must be neutralized.  However, since the person can't attack the person's lack of self-deception, he attacks the person himself.
Suddenly, that individual becomes "mentally unbalanced," a "witch", "delusional", or a "communist" also.  He must beat that person into submission by trying to destroy his self-worth.
What a sad commentary on the human race--that we think we must whip the id of anyone who tries to enlighten us or who disagrees with us.

Self-delusion is a quicksand, eventually swallowing your soul. I don't know why people choose not to see and believe the facts and real evidence, choosing instead to embrace lies and illusion because of inner bias. Some are literally addicted to this, unwilling to change their self- or world-view, rather than accept their flaws, or addiction, or whatever, and free themselves by embracing change.

Most people who lie don't have good enough memories to save themselves.

I have been described as brutally honest and it is not a compliment. I come from a family that deludes themselves by rewriting history, or simply fabricating events. It is so difficult to cope with that I chose the opposite extreme- being honest about everything, although I try very hard not to be unkind.
P.S.: When I signed on this time, I could see/ read all of your posts. Don't know what the problem was earlier.

Happy my posts popped back up from wherever they were hiding in cyberspace. I just cannot lie anymore; I have had too many people lie to me and get caught in their snare of lies. If I can't say something good, I try very hard not to say anything at all. Sometimes, people goad me into having to be brutally honest with them when they take my keeping quiet as an indicator of weakness and try to bully me. Those are the people who learn the hard way that I can be "brutally honest" if need calls for it.

I was a professional liar until I was in my early 30s and went into therapy- learned a lot of interesting things about lying--and, yes, about myself--I then went 360 degrees--telling the truth 24/7 is easier than lying but then there is lying by omission--I still do the latter as telling the truth isn't always the answer.
Is it delusional of me to think that you know who has been suspended AGAIN at the other site?
comment by greatmartin on May 27, 2011 2:30 PM ()
Yes, it is. Has someone been suspended that I don't know about? I haven't been over there in a few days. The only time I ever lie is to prevent hurting someone's feelings. I don't want to be so blunt that I intentionally hurt someone. Now, if they deserve it, that's another matter!

Once in awhile I catch myself in a state of delusion, and have a good laugh.

It's an easy trap; but if you catch yourself, then you have nothing to worry about.

true stuff here

Thanks, Ana. It's just what I observe in people and it's discouraging because truly self-delusional people will never see the err of their ways. It is always the other people who are wrong, even if that individual is in a minority of one.

As Walter Cronkite was fond of saying, "And that's the way it is!"
