We all have this trait of being able to FULLY CONVINCE OURSELVES that something
is real or not despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
I have spent my entire life trying not to fall into this pit of self-deception. Yet, I witness it constantly in my life. Â There is, for instance, my neighbor who has convinced herself that she has fibromyalgia, because a D.O. told her she did. (Never any follow-up with a rheumatologist) Â Now she justifies her drug dependency on hydrocodone and morphine as being necessary because, after all, she has fibromyalgia.
Then, there's someone else I know who refuses to believe  her "husband" ever frequented visiting prostitutes despite his admitting that he did, though not to her.  Of course, he never denied it either.  Now, that's really stretching self-delusion to new limits.
And what about all those who STILL believe, in spite of every single fact disputing it that Obama was not born in the United States; who swear that he is ignoring the Constitution, who avow that he is at best a socialist and at worse a communist. Â Common sense dictates that these people are practicing a form of self-deception to justify what they WISH were true, not what the facts clearly support.
The problem with self-deception is that it is nothing more than lying, and the worst kind, Â because the person is lying to himself. Â In order to justify whatever he WANTS to believe, he ignores the FACTS in favor of LIES.
And have you ever known anyone who could tell just ONE LIE? Â Soon he must tell another LIE to justify the first self-deceptive lie, Â Before he realizes it, he has told so many lies that he starts to believe them himself.
Then, every person who tries to point out the truth becomes the enemy and must be neutralized. Â However, since the person can't attack the person's lack of self-deception, he attacks the person himself.
Suddenly, that individual becomes "mentally unbalanced," a "witch", "delusional", or a "communist" also. Â He must beat that person into submission by trying to destroy his self-worth.
What a sad commentary on the human race--that we think we must whip the id of anyone who tries to enlighten us or who disagrees with us.
