Dead Man's Hand

There are a number of poker hands that are infamous for one reason or another but none more so than the hand that has become known as "Dead Man's Hand," which Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was shot.

Everyone agrees that he was holding two aces and two eights, all black. Controversy still abounds, as to the fifth card, known as the kicker.

Many poker players today will not play a hand of two eights and two aces because of the connotations attached to it.

Neither did I until I began reading about Wild Bill Hickok. It is interesting about the controversy over the fifth card, which I discuss in more detail over on TimeTraveler.

I wonder why any combination is called a "hand". Isn't that what is attached to my arm?

Good question....Maybe for the same reason pants are called a pair of pants. I'll see if I can find any reason for it being called a "hand."
