The 'Ouch' in the Road

The traveler was walking along the path when he discovered discomfort in his boot.  He stopped and sat on a log on the side of the road and removed his boot.  A pebble fell out and rolled away.  Just a small stone but big enough to stop him for a few minutes. "Humph," he thought, "I took care of the problem and will be on my way.
On down the path he stubbed his toe on a root that had grown beneath the ground and emerged at just the wrong time.  He stumbled to the side of the road and sat on a big rock and removed his boot.  His toe was red and reminded him the boot would have to be put back on just a little looser this time.  He reached into the backpack and found the band-aid placed there for just such an emergency.  Again he thought to himself, "Humph, another stop along the way. But I fixed the problem myself!"  And off he went, limping a little on the sore toe.
Around a bend he didn't see the tree limb sticking out of the old oak that had lived over a hundred years right there in the same place. The limb smacked him on the side of his head and nearly knocked him over.  He again stumbled, steadied his gait and walked on.  "Humph," he said to himself, "old tree should be cut down and used for firewood. But I took care of the problem myself and now can be on my way."
A few miles on down the road he didn't see the ditch washed across the path after so many Spring rains had taken the soil away and left a deep cut in the road.  This time he fell completely in the hole and was unable to bring himself back out.  He pulled and tugged and moaned and groaned...but to no avail. He was stranded in the ditch alone. "I shall surely die here," he thought to himself. "I cannot do this alone."  Just as he was about to resign himself to a fate of dying alone there in the ditch he felt a hand on his shoulder.  He looked up and there was a man with strong arms, big hands and a steady grip.  "I'll help you out my friend," he said.  "Just give me your hand and trust me."
Again the traveler was on his way down the path. "Hmmm," he thought,"I couldn't do this one myself. I had to have help.  I can handle the little things, but I must depend on someone else to get me out of the big ditches."  As he went on his way, the pebble didn't seem so big.  The tree root didn't seem so hard.  The old tree seemed to have its place on the side of the road.
He arrived at his destination and gladly shared his story and how a friend made it possible for him to complete the journey.
