Some Things I've Built with Salvage

I think I've shown you the kitchen of my old house. What I may not have mentioned is that I remodeled it using salvaged materials, much of it scrounged from the dump or pulled off of a burn pile. I kept the lower half of my kitchen, and most of the infrastructure of the upper cabinets, but I used salvaged windows and doors and trim to reface them.

In the next picture, I used garage door panels and some other salvaged wood and trim to make a corner cupboard. Farther on you will see two storage benches that I made from similar garage door panels. The window was one we purchased at a garage sale for about a tenth what it would have cost us. Outside the window are planter boxes, which you can't see, also made from salvaged wood.

In the next picture are garage doors for closet doors for one of the bedrooms. My motto was 'never pay for anything that you can get for free'. Other things I've salvaged are sheetrock, nails, plywood, and siding. Of the doors that I installed, most of them were either used or came from the Habitat store. Same with the trim.

The bench seat is fantastic and I just love the look of that window as well.

Thank you! They are so versatile! I have them in my new kitchen now. We store large items there like paper towels. Wish I had built a few more of them!

I love the bench you made! my future son in law got into making furniture from wood pallets. he made me a wonderful bench for my front porch, he even stained it!

Oh, that's sweet! Sounds like he put a lot of work into it!

1962 i started building a home, just about all of it except for the roofing iron came from salvage yards or auctions , over the years as my family grew i just added another room till in the end it was a 4 bedroom home.
Yours looks fantastic and i lift my hat to you

Wow, that's quite an accomplishment! I always wanted to at least build a shed or a greenhouse using salvaged materials. Unfortunately, never got around to that.

Your home looks beautiful. Now I picture you in goggles and carpenter's apron surrounded by power tools.

Maggiemae you are a genius. You have made all of this look so good!
The cabinets and doors are lovely!!!! My sister in law has a knack for
this. I don't have the vision.

Thank you! You know what they say about genius... 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration, lol.

Good job--and that's why I never owned a home!! I just bang a nail in the wall and the whole house falls down!!

LOL! It can happen! One thing we really try not to do is pull anything up or out. You don't want to know what's underneath.

I have to admit, space is nice! It's especially nice when you've finished the project and can actually use it!

Nice! We're not allowed access to the dump around here, but free salvage is often offered on freecycle. Trade&sell is also a possibility. I got two 275 gallon oil tanks for 75 bucks each. I'm hoping to get a $90 chimney cap in the same way.

Wow, that was a good buy! I've seen a couple of chimney caps for cheap out here. We need one too. I don't even know where the dump is around here. I'm afraid I did get a little bit over my head with stuff last time and I'm trying not to do that again. Still, when it's something you need right away, it's nice to get a freebie, or a bargain.
